    Eliminating the traveler?

Another option to avoid tangles is to install a longer tiller handle. It doesn't have to be much longer than stock, just enough to stop the bridle from falling over the tip. That's something I plan to try as it's fairly easy to make.

    improvements

I don't know if you're an active member or not, but if you are, how did this work out for you? I was warned not to place too much pressure at a single point on the boom or it could bend the spar. I'm also curious if the Barney Post mounts are strong enough to take the entire load from the...

    Eliminating the traveler?

Has anyone tried eliminating the traveler on the 14.2 and just running blocks between the Barney Post and the boom, like most sailboats do? I'd love to do away with the traveler all together, but I'm not sure if the Barney Post mounts could handle the entire load placed on them by the...

    Harness and Harness Rigging Question

I'm going to try a traditional trapeze rig, attached high up on the mast, and use a kite waist-harness for support. That way the support will come from above, and not below from the rail or cockpit floor. Fingers crossed. -W

Do I need a trapeze ring with a block?

It seems like most boats I see have a hoist-ring with a block (pulley) on them, but some dinghies, like the C420, don't. This makes me wonder if that's because a lot of Club 420's are crewed by young kids who don't weigh enough to warrant having a 2:1 ratio on the trap line. I weigh in at...

1988 Capri 14.2 Owners Manual & Catalina Yachts General Handbook

I'm fortunate to sail in a location with multiple sailing clubs, sculling clubs, sailing schools, and marinas, full of experienced, courteous and safety-minded members. We don't get a lot of powerboats, but those we do always know the laws and strictly adhere to them. Are you on a lake? I...

Does anyone else hate their sails as much as I do?

Another example of good looking, multi-colored sails.......... that don't have a trace of pink in them. :D

1988 Capri 14.2 Owners Manual & Catalina Yachts General Handbook

If you haven't already, get yourself a masthead float. The 14.2 sits so incredibly high in the water when it's laying on its side, it won't be an issue at all, so long as it doesn't turtle........ and the float won't let it turtle. I get no water at all in my cockpit when I capsize, because of...

    Harness and Harness Rigging Question

I considered that, but then it would be pulling down on my back at a very steep angle, and that could be bad; like lifting something heavy. Straight across, or better yet, slightly upward would be much better and more comfortable. I sure wish the Capri had a taller Barney Post, like some of...

    Harness and Harness Rigging Question

I sure wish this question had been asked 11 years later then it was. I'm going through the same thing with my boat right now. Due to an issue with a "dodgy back" (25 year-old disc herniation), I'm brainstorming ideas for a harness system myself, and I too am leaning towards something involving...

    Easy to capsize?

I find my Mod 2 (1992) Capri 14.2 to be anything but tender. It's a very stable boat that only tries to dump me in the water if I'm stupid enough to go out in winds above 20mph... And even then I have to do something dumb, like fail to sheet out when it starts to tip over. In light to...

How fast does the 14.2 turtle?

My first week of ownership, I knocked it over at the dock several times, and quickly found I was grateful the previous owner had installed a rope, boarding ladder, attached at the Barney Post. I have since installed a second rope ladder, made with 1/2" rope, that runs through one of the drain...

    Jib window advice

Bump. :D The puny size of the window was a big reason I opted to upgrade to a jib from SLO. I just can't see a darn thing through the factory jib window, and it makes for a big blind spot on the leeward side of the boat. If this photo is accurate, and I'm told that it is, it looks like the new...

How fast does the 14.2 turtle?

2 seconds?? Yikes! Fortunately I plan to sail in much lighter winds.. Mellow daysailing is my main interest, to start at least. Still, I guess I'll hang onto that ugly float a while longer. Better safe than sorry.

    Straightening a bent mast

How fast does the 14.2 turtle?

This is a silly question, because the results could vary widely depending on conditions, like wind speed, wave height, etc, so I just mean in general how long... One day, when I get around to it, I'm going to tie my Capri up at the dock, with the mast float removed, and tip it over, just to...

Does anyone else hate their sails as much as I do?

I was given the option to order race sails from SLO, but when I told them my intentions for the boat, they talked me out of it. I did go for a reef point, though, as the winds where I sail can get pretty strong in the afternoon. I can't wait to get brand-new, crisp Dacron on my spars and see...
