Using a bicycle spoke tension meter to measure shroud tension?

Interesting thought; a few minutes ago I didn't even know that sort of things existed :D They seem to take up to 3 mm spokes, and the scales go nearly up to 200 kg, so it's in the same ballpark with the thickness and tension we're measuring. The thing is, bike spokes and jib luff wires are...

    470 Layout

Wavedancer, that layout is more than ten years old; current boats have even more lines led to the side tanks :D _

    470 Layout

I meant that the secondary vang line should run first from the boom to the mast, then down to the mast step. It will hit the centreboard case (the forward "lip" of it) if you lead it back directly from the mast. As I also said, the aft exit blocks are at an angle that doesn't point directly to...

The ILCA Dinghy became a reality

Where? What's the point of that? Aren't you free to have any sticker on the boat, chartered or not? Damn, the boats should be able to say "PSA" in big red letters! The only thing they can't do is to sell them in Canada as new boats. _

The ILCA Dinghy became a reality

Would make no sense. If the name is banned, then everybody would have to cover their sail insignia as well, and tape over every "Laser" on fittings... not happening. Who'd benefit from that? Or the other way round, whose loss is it if some of the boats don't display the name? As I understand...

The ILCA Dinghy became a reality

torrid, isn't this a bit of an overreaction? What is so different now? The boats in question won't affect the NA market as they're going elsewhere. Even if they'd stay, I don't see why they couldn't be sold as legal "Lasers" - the trademark limitations shouldn't concern them after they become...

The ILCA Dinghy became a reality

This organization is very legit. You just can't use the trademark on PSA-built boats in Canada, at the Radial Youth Worlds. That would be PSA's business. Of course the boats have WS plaques. They don't say "Laser" anymore anyway. _

The ILCA Dinghy became a reality

I haven't made, and don't know of, any objective comparisons, but just the fact that PSA's output is a fraction of LP's makes one suppose that they can concentrate more on quality. (And PSJ even more so.) LP is more of a mass producer. _

The ILCA Dinghy became a reality

Exactly. They don't say "Laser" so they don't breach LP's trademark. Interesting that this is already happening. But it's an understandable emergency measure at this point in time. In two weeks, we may not need those labels again! _

    470 Layout

At this point, you should check the mast foot position, because it's going to affect everything you might attach to the mast step. Measure the distance from the transom to the aft edge of the mast. The spar should stand at 90° to the mast gate (just for this measurement!), and you should...

    470 Layout

There are several ways of doing that, and having the sheaves at right angles does minimize rope/rope friction, BUT it's highly likely that you need to orient the hook block so that there's the least friction against the mast itself (like in the Mackay picture). But it's something that you have...

    Carbon tiller

Nickolas, I think you're making a big deal out of nothing. 30 millilitres? Come on, you'll get that much water (through the aforementioned breathing hole) if you even once fill the cockpit. That is NORMAL. If your bailer connection were leaking, you would get tens of times more water in...

    470 Layout

I think I have a set like that somewhere... they're too narrow for a Lightning, but if they're good for a 420 mast and gate, they should work on a 470, too. If you go down the chock route, you can even make them yourself out of nylon or some similar material. And then there's this guy in...

    Carbon tiller

The breathing hole is 1) very small and 2) as torrid said, located at a point that is among the last to submerge no matter how the boat is oriented. The only way to get water through there is to keep the cockpit full of water for significant amounts of time (keeping the bailer closed "helps")...

    470 Layout

Harken 408F Weird. Very weird. There seem to be "F" version cleats and eyestraps, too! But you can see that it's something that shows up at general marine stores and ones for other water activities than sailing, not sailing specialists. Maybe it's a mistake/misunderstanding that just spread...

    470 Layout

Very un-1970-ish... but very practical. At the time, almost all suitable rope was white. When I was setting up my first 470, I wanted the jibsheet to be easily visible, so I chose a red line for that. The mainsheet already happened to be blue, and the colour system developed from there :D I...
