How do you flip a Sunfish that has capsized?

Could someone explain the bottle to the head of the sail thing as if to a complete idiot, the idiot being me? What does it do exactly? Is that really enough to keep it buoyant enough to not turtle? So I guess about 2 litres is the rough displacement a flooded mast would have? And so turtling...

My First Capsize in Years and Years...

Tangling with a mainsheet has now happened to me twice. The first time was when I was thrown off a catamaran, but the catamaran had stayed upright after my encounter between two big cruiser wakes that struck at weird angles--simultaneously. The hulls are skinny, so there really wasn't a problem...

    Sunfish turtling

Make sure your spars don't leak to minimize turtling. Big waves will sometimes make your boat turtle if you are not quick enough to counteract. And yes, you can dry capsize a Sunfish, unless you are 'practicing' death rolls.

    Righting Sunfish

Volume of mast: 3.14...x 1.125" x 120"= 477.13 cubic inches 1 gallon = ~ 231 cubic inches 231/477.13=~2 the mast can hold about 2 gallons. weight of 1 gallon of water = ~8.35lbs weight of empty mast + 16.7 lbs = full mast. I'm rusty but that should be it. For buoyancy, I'd need more...

    What's in the mast?

Thanks for the info Mike. I have previously perused the class rules, etc. to note the legal mods to a fish. Frankly, I'm a little surprised that only one "pump" per wave is allowed (subject to apparent variations in enforcement from regatta to regatta). I would think from a purely athletic...

    What's in the mast?

As for the "class officials" here's the link for ours: http://www.sunfishclass.org/ and the "National organization for sailing overall": http://www.ussailing.org/ Neither of which means a hill of beans if you don't participate in organized racing. As an FYI adding foam to a mast does NOTHING...

    wetsuits and sailing

Thanks for the explanation. In your particular situation, I believe that a dry suit is the safer solution since you write that you might spend a lot of time in cold water. Unfortunately, a dry suit is more expensive, although, as you can see from the other input in this thread, many have two...

    Fill Spars with Foam?

We have a small fleet of Sunfish that we use for lessons (about 13) and regattas, with kids as young as 7 or 8 years old, and they can all right a sunfish, even when turtled. We did experiment by tying a bumper to the top of the mast, but that did not prevent the boats from turtling. The keys...
