Actually, I’m making her sail myself out of 4oz Dacron. I could put the sailfish logo on with sublimation, because I have a printer for that, but I’m going to use the self adhesive Insignia fabric and cut it out with a die cut machine. The new owner asked for red/white stripes. :-)
Oh I’m definitely going to be trying this many times on scrap first! Great idea about a high school wood shop. My youngest goes to a very very well appointed school. Resources unlike anything I’ve ever seen. I’ll reach out to them too!
Aha! Now I understand why the joint is so odd looking! The original seam appears to wiggle all over the place. Mystery solved, and I really appreciate the knowledge before I hit my boards with a hand planer or worse. I feel more comfortable doing a lap joint.
Chicago is home, but I’m in Michigan this week taking care of my niece and nephew while parents are on business trips…. Lo and behold! I just picked up the two sheets of 1/4” marine plywood I have been trying to source locally with zero success, for months. This is to replace Red Rubber Duck...
I’m taking my very first vacation since the Covid-19 pandemic began, by spending 6 days in Daytona Beach FL, where my middle daughter is a junior in college. Im Having a heck of a time getting 1/4 inch mahogany plywood up in Chicago. Ordering online is also crazy, with shipping rates in the...
Thank you! Actually, the owner very much wants to have a varnished boat unless it’s entirely impossible. Your points are well taken, and I’ll reach out and see what his thoughts are on a painted hull vs. the varnish appearance.
For my birthday this year, I bought myself Japanese pull saws and reverse turning bits to drill out RRD’s deck screws. Well, best paid plans and all that…. I don’t think those are screws on the edge of her deck at all. Of course they aren’t! They are most likely ring shank nails. So…because...
WARRIOR Screw Extractor and Left-Hand Drill Bit Combo Set, 10 Piece - Item 61981 / 40349 / 63987 Screw Extractor and Left-Hand Drill Bit Combo Set, 10 Piece
Going to go pick up a set! Thanks
You and Skipper are treasures! I’m fastening back on the deck and deck hardware on the late 1950’s (I think) wooden Sailfish. I think some of the original screws for the deck hardware might survive just fine, but I know many of those used to secure the deck itself have had their tops sheared...
Truth. I did realize that once I started reading the parts list. Do you think the brass will be okay? Or should I be looking for bronze? Or use stainless steel?
Whoops again! Looks like the rounded don’t go very long. Perhaps I’ll make one more trip north today to see if any gems remain. I also got a gallon of the veneer adhesive that I need for $10!
I read somewhere that the mast step uses the oval rounded ;-). So I’ve got a use for the long ones at least
Thanks for the heads up on the tapered bit. I’m still very much a beginner on so much of this, but I love the learning I get from this forum’s feedback!!
