Vise or vise grips is what we've used. Go slow, it is easy to snap that tip off. If you don't get it perfect then the pintle will bind. I'd suggest replacement long term, a seller on this page probably has used or new.

Good sellers on this Forum are Alan, sailcraftri and a few others. On ebay snfish1 is good. If you have to replace we'd suggest going with new unless you get it from one of these sellers. The tolerance is tight and an old crusty pintle can stick.

We need photos of the used gal, and a name :)

The stuff work hardens quick with bends. If you can heat red hot and quench in water that should anneal it.

Given this person has plastic rudder cheeks it might be best not to heat it red hot! Disassembling those things can be a pain, but that could be the preferred approach.

I just checked current prices for a new Sunfish pintle. They've escalated in value, and should be spoken of as "precious metal"!

One can always substitute a ⅜" bolt with a Nylok nut, but the original pintel is such an elegant piece of S/S hardware from the factory. :(

I think I'd take Shorefun's annealing step. Maybe a muffler shop or High School Metal Shop could help you?

Quenching won't anneal it - it will harden it. Opposite of what you want.

...and you really probably want to temper it, not anneal it.

The newer replacement kits have both a snap ring and a cotter pin to secure the spring, belts and suspenders approach. The older style only had a snap ring and that can be hard to install without the proper tool or appropriate Sailor Talk. $36 price range.

Thxs to all suggestions! You guys are the best! I couldn't get enough purchase on pindle to bend it while it was attached to the wood rudder. So I slowly tapped it against my vice, with hammer, rotating it alot. It straightened out nicely, and now easier to snap on and stays on. Will keep attachment on purchasing new one in future if needed. Boat is a 1975. All original. Did add new lines. Re did mahogany rudder and and daggerboard. Turned out fantastic. Just plugged the bailer in cockpit for now. It is the old style metal one missing the screw plug and "pinpong ball". Would liket to keep it original. I see there are replacement plastic kits, but for now I'm not sailing into too rough of seas! No name yet, waiting for her to te me. Thx for all help.

Some seller on here may have just the DePersia bailer cap, and they pop up from time to time on ebay. If you find one it needs to be lubricated periodically, ALCORT recommended Vaseline monthly. Your boat is looking good!

I posted after checking how to anneal 316 and the instructions are clear in needing water quench. I am used to annealing various metals to work them so I always check first.

If you cannot find a Depersia plug you can use a PVC pipe threaded plug. Cannot remember what size you need but somewhere 1-1/4 I think. Then just drill a few holes in it so it thinks it's a Depersia.

The De Persia bailer plug is 7/8" - 14 UNF.

If trying to us a PVC plug - you would go with 1/2".

7/8"-14 has a major diameter of 0.875"
1/2" NPT has a major diameter 0f 0.84" - and it's tapered, so it should work.

Another option (if you can find any) are SAE O-Ring port caps.

RPO-110 from here

If you pull the snap ring, the post will drop out..then you can heat, straighten, cool and reinstall..I just roll them on a machine surface or check them in the rudder cheek.

Thx again! Always enjoy the hunt. Will remember the Vaseline!
vaseline is not eco friendly. dont put it in the waterways. maybe in 1968 it was ok, but im surer there are marine grade lubes that are entirnmentally friendly for through hulls and things like that. :)

i sail in way too much garbage as it is.
