Mast head float.

I'm making a mast head float similar in size and shape as a Baby bob for my Capri 14.2 out of pink foam with a layer of fiberglass and epoxy. Before I join the two halves, I plan to remove all but about an inch of the foam for weight reduction. Do you agree that removing the foam creating a hollow float will have little effect on the buoyancy of the float versus leaving the foam in the float?

How much does the foam you're removing weigh? I wonder if the foam itself has floatation value, or is it the air trapped inside the cells that does the job? In any case, it's smart to have the floatation device, my buddy's Capri turtled late last season and it wasn't pretty!

I think I removed around 12 ounces of foam. The pink foam seems pretty dense and is sandable unlike white styrofoam. The finished float itself now weighs about 18 ounces so it should end up way less than 2 pounds with its attachment hardware where the Baby bob is 2.5 lbs.

Cool idea! Let us know how it works. I made a clone of the mast float sold on Catalina direct with high buoyancy foam and sailcloth. I haven't capsized yet, but plan to (controlled!) when the water gets warm.
