New Style Daggerboard - Hand Hold

I'm still new to the class - 14 months. North Americans next week here in Charleston. The "older" style daggerboard has a through-handhold and can be easily grabbed. The new style daggerboard does not have "thought the board" handhold. I noticed in some of the YouTube videos, e.g., Paul John's, that he attached a knotted rope handle to the new style daggerboard to more easily raise and lower it. Anyone have any thoughts on whether the knotted rope handle is class legal? Or whether it would be legal to cut a hand-hole in the new style daggerboard to more easily grasp it??? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

The centerboard you have comes from the manufacturer supplied with a line, which is apparently what Paul Jon is using, so it is legal to have a line handle. Laser Performance shows how to rig it in their instruction manual https://doryventures.scene7.com/is/...es/Sunfish Rigging Guide Final.pdf?lang=en_US Combined with this rule, you should be legal when you add a line handle

That said, it seems the rules should be updated to explicitly permit the line and specify a replacement.

There is nowhere in the rules that says you can saw a hole in a daggerboard, so I think adding your own hole would be illegal, but the measurer should be on site at the North Americans so you can ask him.

Thanks for the reply Beldar. The new style daggerboard that I have has a circular "impression" in the top aft of the centerboard, but no "through" hole. Has anyone on here drilled through that circular impression to attach a line handle through the hole? And, if so, is the circular impression "solid" or did you have to patch the hole that you drilled to seal the hole so that moisture/water would not intrude into the top of the daggerboard? Thanks!

Very weird. I don't know. That hole should go through. Laser Performance seems to frequently get confused when they make things these days. In this case I would email the ISCA and USSCA presidents to alert them as this is a significant issue! ISCA is Rich Chapman and USSCA is Will Kresic. Their contact info should be on sunfishclass.org.

Yes, very weird - that is why I wrote the original question, above. lol. I've got a 2013 boat with 2013 daggerboard. But I will contact them regardless. Thanks. Anyone else who has run into this issue, please let me know if you drilled the hole, etc. ???

It is definitely a Laser Performance board? I have one of that vintage and it is fine - hole goes thru. I don't know how Intensity does theirs. But I'd check with the officers to see what they know.

this is my daggerboard from Intensity sails. small hole towards the back (right side) has my rope handle.
front hole towards the front (left) is where I run the bungee cord up to the tack of the sail (and back).
the "dimpled" handle area is basically worthless.

I am about 100% sure I bought this in 2013 and this is how it should look. Sounds like you will have to drill a hole as you are out of warranty so won’t be able to get one from LP. I’d check with the officers to see if they know someone who can advise you how to drill the holes to maintain the board’s integrity. As you can see there is a large hole forward and a smaller one aft.
