    mast step

If you can get your hand on a fiber optic camera to take a look through a scew whole you can see what you are dealing with. If the donut is intact leave it alone. If you hear something chunky inside the hull the donut maybe partially broken and the next big wind and your mast will come down...

Class Politics Practice sails for local racing

I was recently sailing in Melbourne, Aus, and this issue split the club. The old timers quickly passed an amendment to the club racing rules stating that all boats must be class legal. For the three of use using practise sails it left a bad taste in our mouth, as no discussion was engaged. Save...

    Laser Sailing in Niagara Region

I recently moved back to St Catharines, Ontario. Is there an active Laser fleet in the area. I have been out of the region for the past 15 years and have lost touch with the local scene. Can anyone help me out? :D

    daring youth vs. skilled maturity

In my youth the most inspiring laser sailor was 78 year old gentleman of the sea. He remained a competitive threat until health issues took him off the water in his 79th year. "Old" Matt was as skilled of any of us young critters keeping fit by sailing in Florida in the winter and Upper New York...

    couple quick questions...

The advantage to sheeting in versus Sailing by the lee is having the centre of gravity/ force of your sail on your side of the mast. Sailing by the lee in heavy air puts the main force of the sail in front of the mast. This causes your bow to be pushed down and submarine. It also causes the...

    couple quick questions...

Sailing by the Lee has the same net effect in reducing the sail area. But gives you less control. I found that sheeting in does not effect my speed, but my boat control is greatly improved. Keep in mind I am over 200 lbs and when I am over powered it is blowing pretty hard ie over 30

    couple quick questions...

In big winds, sheet in as if you are on a reach. This reduces the sail area catching wind and gives you more control. The boat will stop rocking. Vang off. Jibe at full speed and Fast. Always keep the board up half way as sugested. A second advantage of sheeting is less of your mainsheet is...

That is why I generally buy my sails in New York. With the exception of 1986. Out of State Purchase...No Taxes! With the strong CDN $. IT looks like a good time to buy in US. Sailing in Canada can be expensive but the "free drugs" are needed for us old timers. UK prices anyone?

    laser prices

Laser sail prices are out of control. In Canada we pay $850 +15% tax. I bought a sail in the US in 1992 for 350 CDN. At the same time this sail retailed in Canada for $550 +15% tax. In 1986 I bought Sail in the UK for $100lb or $200CDN at the time. Olympic class + the monopoly + Competiton...

    Which upgrade is better?

Go for the full up grade ASAP. Even as a heavy weight Laser Sailor 105 KG the convience of the new controls in high winds is a must. Your outhaul is impossible to adjust with the old rig once you've rounded the windward mark. I have been sailing Lasers since 1981 and can recall the odd leg of...
