As the boat goes over, try to jump over the top and land on the dagger board. It makes for a much quicker recovery. Also, when the boat comes back up, try and step back in. If done correctly, you won't get wet!
Separate start seems much better to me. If I was in a full rig and starting with radials, I would fight real hard to start above a radial. It would be a nice way to get an acceleration hole right after the start.

Mylar sails shrink over time because of all the crinkles the sail gets from use (mostly flaking the sail) This is opposite for Dacron sails which stretch over time. This is due to the crimp in the cloth relaxing with more use. This is why an older sail will have more camber.
