The fun begins with styrofoam blocks

I still have the old bronze fittings. I can't see paying $300.00+ for the new rudder assembly. I might as well look for a whole new boat! Just me ranting about some of the costs associated with Sunfish parts! SR

The fun begins with styrofoam blocks

I cut a couple portholes in the deck and found out that all the styrofoam blocks were loose. I could press slightly on the deck and watch the blocks move in their foam anchors. I took this as a sign that the bonds had broke between the hull and the styrofoam, and the boat would be less stiff. I...

Nice Job. So what role does the banana play? ;)

    Worth the Restoring Hassle?

Al, I've kind'a changed my mind in how I'm going to deal with this boat. Now I look at it as a way to teach myself fiberglass repair, and that is an end in itself. If I find that I really enjoy sailing the boat I may just buy a newer one and sell this one. Or I may try a different boat...

    Worth the Restoring Hassle?

Hi Herb, I figure the cost of shipping the Fish to Idaho would cost more than just repairing my current boat. :D SR

    Truck Bed Trasport

I really like the idea of rolling a dolly up into the back of your truck. I'm glad I asked. That seems like the best way for a single person to transport a sunfish without a trailer. So how far does the Fish stick above your cab, and doesn't it try to fly off? Thanks, SR

    Truck Bed Trasport

Hello again, Well I've been diligently repairing my old Sunfish. I hope to sail it this comming spring. Can you believe that it still has its original sail from 1965! It looks in good repair too. My question is: has anyone successfuly transported a Sunfish in the bed of there pickup? If...

    Worth the Restoring Hassle?

I looked at the big Keel repair. I like the logic behind putting the piece of wood in for reenforcment, but why such a large peice of wood (heavy oak, not balsa), and why no fiberglass on the wood? It seems to me the big piece of fiberglass should be on the inside of the hull so it doesn't get...

    Worth the Restoring Hassle?

I just started sanding the bottom. It looks like it will probably need paint because the gelcoat is pretty much the consitancy of sand stone in places and I have made it to the fiberglass in some spots. I also opened up the bad bondo repairs only to find some damaged areas running along the...

    Refinishing Mahogany Dagger board

Hi Al What is the 2 part polyurethane that your are using? Is it UV protective? I would love to refinish my '65 parts using a varnish that will last a long time.

Thanks Keven, Thats probably the most practial way to deal with the underside of the boat. SR

    Worth the Restoring Hassle?

Hello, I recently aquired a 1965 Sunfish. The bottom is covered with old crusty bottom paint and some terrible (but small) bondo like repairs. I'm wondering if I should prep and gelcoat, or just prep and paint the bottom. The boat was given to me, and it's probably only worth $200 at...
