    J24 #2379 Trailor and Extras

Sorry, Super Strings has been sold. I'll take down the ad when I find out how. I do have one prototype J/24 EZ conversion kit consisting of a mast extension, 4 1/4" stay extenders and a tall jib (80 races but in very good condition - roughly equivalent to 15 to 20 races on a class Genoa) $500...

    J24 #2379 Trailor and Extras

1981 J24 sail# 2379 hull # PSL1023790181 $7100. Two boats in one - a fast class legal J/24 and (with tall jib quick conversion kit), a more comfortable, roomy, economical, and easier to sail PHRF racer. Current J/24 Measurement Certificate, good racing record Sailor's Tailor tent style boat...

    Declining J/24 Interest ?

I've been racing my J/24 for 15 years and now my crew and I are getting old enough to want more comfort and a boat that is easier to sail. Our local fleet got down to 3 last year (from 10 a decade ago) so it was clear we were mostly going to race PHRF. I made a kit for extending the mast and...

    Winches

The newer 35 power Harkens 35.2s are slower but more powerful than the 24 power Barient 19s. The Harkens are much easier for less powerful crews but if you are strong enough the extra power is unnecessary. I used 10" handles with my Barients but the last lost handle was replaced with an 8" for...

    gin poles

The ideal gin pole is 19 feet above the deck, though you can have it a bit shorter at the cost of having to lift the mast from below its balance point.

    New Rules and Rules Conversion

D.1.1 The descriptions of modifications for hoisting suffer from lack of names for the various parts. The vertical hatch is named but the rest of the hatch assembly parts are not. The old and new style sliding parts and the panel above the new style horizontal sliding part need standard names.

    New Rules and Rules Conversion

C.10.6 (Sorry -this next remark is close to nit picking) (3) and (4) don't seen to apply to a symmetrical spinnaker gibed end to end. The terms in the J/24s case are in-use references, not specific parts. The parts are “clews” and “sheets”.

    New Rules and Rules Conversion

C.7.1(h) In order to address the fact that most racing J/24s are launched via lifting strap attached to the bar between the aft keel bolts.,I suggest an additional section (h) in C7.1 Alternate 1 (h) To facilitate launching via hoist, the a notch wide enough for the lifting strap may be cut...

    New Rules and Rules Conversion

C.7.1(b) I suggest the word “may” instead of “shall” As worded it appears to make a verm job mandatory for older boats – even for ones that don't need it.

    New Rules and Rules Conversion

C.5.1 Optional (a) and (b) Why are mooring lines in sec (a) and dock lines and fenders in sec (b). (a) or (b) The lifting strap that most boats carry should be added somewhere as optional equipment

    New Rules and Rules Conversion

C.5.1(b) (1) needs to be reworded for clarity. The text reads : … If the engine runs on petrol or propane, it shall carry at least 2 liters of petrol or 1kg … If the motor is electric it must carry at least two batteries. The text suggests the engine shall carry 2 liters or the electric motor...

    New Rules and Rules Conversion

C 5.1(a) (2) “Anchor and chain” is different from the old “anchor with or without chain” . Is this the same as the old since the length of chain is not specified and could be 0 length?

    New Rules and Rules Conversion

A.2 Is “ICA” from template? Will the final have “IJCA “ instead ?

    Declining J/24 Interest ?

I've been looking at the decreasing local interest in J/24 racing and thinking about what might be done to increase it. Part of the J/24's attraction has been the difficulty of sailing it well but, as I and my crew members are getting older, we are arriving at a belief that the J/24 is not as...

    Block size

I have 57mm Harkins for all spin blocks (switchable ratchets aft and automatic amidships). The Genoa blocks have much higher loads and I mostly use Harkin 75mm ratchets. I do also have a Lopez block set which uses 57mm but they are not as durable.
