    Leaky Laser: advice sought

Inspection ports are approx 6" circles with a lid that can be removed - they are present if someone had done prior repairs to the boat and allow access to the hull interior. Relatively easy to install and readily available. You seem to have found the leak and would need to install a mast step...

Questions on used laser from newbie

Laser 2 is a two person boat for relatively light crew, fairly technical and high performance with trapeze and spinnaker. See http://www.laser2sailing.org/boat/ or google for more info. More complex rigging and gear and quite a different animal from a Laser where the simplicity is one of the...

Questions on used laser from newbie

If it has a jib it isn't a Laser - maybe a Laser II but that is a completely different boat. Depends what you want, for recreational use it may not matter to you.

    Laser outhaul

This link http://www.roostersailing.com/merchant2/articles/outhaul.pdf explains most of it, a few details are specific to their kit but gives a pretty good idea.

    Laser outhaul

For a deck lead outhaul I believe by definition this is "new rigging" or post-2001 - happy to be corrected by more experienced sailors as I just did this conversion on a new-to-me 1982 Laser.

    Laser outhaul

The Vanguard kit I bought (Performance Upgrade for Outhaul and Cunningham) has all I needed in it and good instructions. Imagine other available kits would as well and I don't think you can do better buying the bits separately.

    XD System Installation

I did it by hand - don't trust power drills for sensitive work where stripping is a concern, though I suppose if you kept clutch setting low and did last bit by hand it would be fine. For the fairlead one up front don't attach the blocks until after it's screwed on - the block swivels will block...

    XD System Installation

I did this this weekend on my 82 Laser using the Vanguard Performance Upgrade kit. Everything I needed was in there and diagrams were good. I just used the old cleat holes with some 3M 4200 sealant on threads and worked well. I'd only consider a thru-bolt with a backing plate if a) holes were...

How To Install A Self Bailer First Time?

Thanks. I was planning to use the 3M Marine Silicon that James had shown in his instructions. Good idea re drilling.

How To Install A Self Bailer First Time?

I have a new to me 1982 Laser that never appears to have had a bailer. Any tricks to the first time install? I presume I'd dry fit it, mark where the screw hits the hull, drill a hole appropriate size for the anchor and then follow the remaining instructions from James's very helpful blog. I...

New guy, old Laser: advice on upgrades please

I'm in Ontario, the boat is at cottage near Huntsville, asking $600 - repainted recently and in pretty good shape. I suspect though from your username that that might be a little far from you! Appreciate the other tips. I'll consider a sail and our annual regatta race is so casual that even in...

New guy, old Laser: advice on upgrades please

OK, thanks. If it is too weak/small to allow a drill hole then perhaps a shackle secured/lashed around the lower mast and below the vang "tab" ?? I don't have the boat nearby but I can no doubt rig something up.

New guy, old Laser: advice on upgrades please

Thanks for another excellent response. I did order (just before your post actually!) the Cunningham/outhaul upgrade, as well as a Carbo Ratchamatic mainsheet block, some new plugs, a new traveler line, some tells, a clew strap, and a small single block to make the old Vang 8-1. What is the...

New guy, old Laser: advice on upgrades please

Hi, I just got an older Laser (probably mid-80's) for free from our cottage neighbour. I'll use it mostly for recreational casual use with one informal race a year at our cottage regatta (small lake in Muskoka). I've done casual sailing for a few years, but no expert. Boat hasn't had much use...
