mine looks like that they went designed well. replace the wood with pressure treated wood and make sure the engine is secured to the boat with a line or something. also raise out of water when sailing it creates a lot of drag on a stbd tack

I would get a boom kicker and when your done sailing use the outhaul and main halyard to act as a topping lift.

I think it's vermiculite they use to put them in the 24 bilge before they found out that it tends to expand when kept on a trailer or in my case a hoist. I had mine removed but I would look into getting it removed its a hard and sadly expensive job if there is anyone around you that knows j24s...
You should be good I rarely use mine I mainly sail out so I only use it to pull back into the slip if its blowing weird you will have no issues unless it's blowing like 30kts then you may be underpowered
Cats are known to slide the board helps look at other boats like yours and see what they are doing different. They also cant point very high so keep that in mind you also may be trimmed in too tight. Best of luck to you!
