    Ronstan ClearStart Sailing Watch

I never have any problem wearing the Ronstan Clear Start on my arm... but agree, the old model leaked and died ( I had 2) and the new model I had one so far for a season and still good, but one for my daughter lasted 6 weeks. Ronstan replace them, no questions, but it is inconvenient...

    Laser 4.7 Rig?

My daughter went into a 4.7 at age 11 nearly 12 and 42kg (90lb?) after a season in sabots (similar to Opti) and she handled it well, but we sail on a river so no big waves, mostly flat water. So long as your kids have the skills to dump main, depower & hike etc and are in no way timid they...

How not to lose a rudder?

At the Aussie Nationals the measurers were making everyone that didn't have one, put in a rudder retaining pin, so I think it is class rules?

    sailing by the lee

If you are in the death rolls by the lee, you can try to save a capsize by pulling the tiller hard towards you and going more by the lee, you may end up gybing, this is better than swimming. Your instinct is to push the tiller away and head downwind, you will almost certainly go in! Like the...

we now interrupt your regularly scheduled programming...

This model number bit is cute! with cars a new model has new variants/upgrades etc. But a Laser is a Laser is a Laser, what changes?

    Mast retaining line

Maybe the knot isn't necessary for mast retention purposes, but it keeps the centreboard shocky in the lower part and out of the way. Also it stands up by itself, and would probably just flop on the deck without the knot. I have a resourceful other half who thinks of ways to minimise wear, and...

    Mast retaining line

On ya Keiran, & thanks Iain, I had all that attachment stuff okay but the file size was too big! and I couldn't get it any smaller....will have to take low res. photo next time. All that verbal doo dah and a picture tells a thousand words!

    Mast retaining line

Several at our club use shock cord passed thru the cunninham plate eyes, knotted off to form a triangle then a loop which you just pop over the gooseneck prior to attaching the vang. It is the right length when the loop that goes over the gooseneck is a bit loose and doesn't need to be stretched...

    Too big for a Laser??

Over 90kgs is "cruiser" division at some regattas. Sure you can sail a Laser, but you won't be competitive in under 20 knots, then you'll scream it! I believe the Finn is suited to heavier sailors if you want to go with a singlehander.

    attaching boom while under sail

This is pure guess work as I haven't had it happen..but I reckon you would need to luff head to wind, then, cleat the main off maybe with 18" - 2 feet between blocks, let off the out haul and vang, then try to re attach the gooseneck. If it was blowing hard you'd probably need to capsize the...

    First Race Experience

Yeh it looks so simple to begin with. Put the pole in the hole, main in one hand, tiller in the other and go sail. Then the fun starts, reality check. Its like a 5 year old learning to ride a bike, you fall off heaps, but also like riding a bike, once learned, you don't forget. Better than...

    Light Wind Main Sheet

I use Marlow Marstrom 6mm, it is cheap, light & floats, however in light winds I think it is most important that the rope is fairly new, as once it is fluffed up from chafing it doesn't roll through the blocks so smoothly, and the boom doesn't go out as easily down wind. Maybe more expensive...

    Which vang

I used to have the old vang with extra purchase so cranking it on was not a problem, getting it off was!! But I have seen strong blokes able to release the old vangs holding the line well up above shoulder height..me I don't have the strength so the cam cleat on the $$ new ones is the go.

    Compass or no compass

Even if you never use it racing, it would be very handy to find your way to shore in the fog. I reckon just once being stuck out there not knowing which way is up would have you wishing you'd spent the money!
