Kick up rudder - always kicking up...

Thanks for your response Bill, and congrats on your new acquisition! That sounds like a heck of deal. I like your solution a lot, and frankly wish I went that route. Unfortunately, I've already gone down the QuickSteel route because I wanted to get out on the damn water! I don't anticipate...

Kick up rudder - always kicking up...

Yeah, I would actually encourage everyone to take a look at their tiller assembly, and make sure that this isn't a problem that is developing. I agree, I think it's a serious design flaw, and pretty negligent, if I'm being totally honest. This boat was "new" to me last year, and I only had it...

Kick up rudder - always kicking up...

A bungee might work. I want to retain the rudder's ability to pop up if I run in to something. The lake I sail at, although very large, and often very deep, is also full of surprising rocks. I might rig the bungee temporarily, until I can figure out a more permanent solution. Thanks for your ideas!

Kick up rudder - always kicking up...

Thanks for your response! Mine also has this locking system, and I too can hear it click into place. I jumped the gun in complaining about this problem publicly, and did not investigate enough. I have since found the culprit. The "button" that locks the rudder into place has worn a...

Baby Bob to the rescue - I hope!

I have mine attached to an oak "plug" that I cut to fit inside the mast and mounted the Bob to. It works alright, but I'm worried about the shearing force generated by going over on the very top of a pretty soft aluminum mast. The last time I went over, it went over quick (20+ kts, just the...

    improvements

My only piece of advice is to get that battery mounted in the "cabin" or hold or whatever you'd like to call it. I single hand my Capri and find that it hates having weight in the back (weight in my case being me). Whenever I carry anything (cooler, gear, anchor, etc.) it always is secured at...

Baby Bob to the rescue - I hope!

I realize that this thread is years and years old... I'm assuming that JGM no longer has these for sale, but I would love to see plans or a place to source the aluminum channel material that you used. This is a much more elegant solution than what I currently have.

Kick up rudder - always kicking up...

I have a 1987 Capri 14.2, and have only owned it for one season. I've really enjoyed it, and have had a lot of fun sailing on Sacandaga Lake outside of Albany, NY. The one critical problem that I have had, and just had this weekend, is that the kick up rudder is always coming up when I sail. I...

    Mast foot movement

Thanks for your input! I really appreciate it. Maybe at the end of the season I'll dig up some match sticks and give it a whirl. My initial temptation was to through-bolt it, but after reading everyone's comments, concerns, and nightmare stories, it sure sounds like the wrong way to go! Thanks...

    Mast foot movement

I recently acquired an 87 Capri 14.2, which is the "family sailor" tradeoff from my Jet 14 which I hoped I could get my wife out on occasionally. I've been a lurker on these forums for a while, but I just joined up today and this is my first post. I've had some experience with the Capri from...
