    Name that boat...

Flat... bow shape is flat... it's a blurry picture but gives the idea. I only had a couple of minutes last fall to snap just a few pictures. Later this spring I'll be able to take some proper pictures, hopefully rigged up. This picture show the mast step (and an old fire hose that appears...

    Name that boat...

Right off, I will acknowledge I'm not posting about my Sunfish... but am hoping for some help from the forum to identify what type of board-boat, scow or 'other' sailboat this is. I've attached a picture of it hanging on a wall in a shed. Whatever it is, it appears to be made from a kit, but...

    Mast Step Fix

Yep, apparently. My father had a Grew Sunfish as well. No serial# plate anywhere I dated it based on the presence of the cockpit aft cubby and having a stripe on the blow only. I'm not sure when Grew stopped building Sunfish but they made powerboats up until they shuttered in 2010/2011...

    Mast Step Fix

Indeed... when I compared to other pictures on this site I couldn't believe the excess foam and of course it was all saturated with water!

Deck Fittings - Upgrade to Bolts

I should add - my bow handle is not bronze - it's 'chrome looking' as well; just the pulley and cleat are bronze.

Deck Fittings - Upgrade to Bolts

Good luck with the repairs! I've got one more sailing weekend left for the season coming up so i'll have to leave my list until the fall when I can work on 'away from the boat' planned jobs (e.g. buying new main sheet spar blocks - the old ones are in terrible shape and are holding back my new...

    Mast Step Fix

I decided not to use fibers or beads - as you said, I just wanted to ensure the crack was sealed. As for the hardener, yup I chose to err on the side of needing lots of time to work and it paid off. It also ended up being a VERY hot day, so I was extra happy I went with the slow.

Deck Fittings - Upgrade to Bolts

Thanks, L&VW. I should have specified I plan to replace the old 1970's wood backing (which in mine were several thin sheets of wood) with a 1 inch block of cedar to act as a plate behind the washers and nuts. This should distribute the stress on the deck.

    Mast Step Fix

Though there are already many posts recommending doing the 'full' fix of leaky mast steps from inside the hull, and posts describing the process, I figured it might be useful to share my own success story with a few pictures. I fixed it inside the hull AND poured a new base in the 'tube'. I...

Deck Fittings - Upgrade to Bolts

Hello all, I recently completed a successful mast step mix (I'll post some pics of the process soon) on my 1972 Grew Sunfish. I am taking advantage of the new 6" (port) hole in the deck to replace the screws holding the original cleat and fairlead-pulley to the deck, with bolts/fender...

    Starbrite (or other) chemical dehumidifier

Good points above about the utility and potential volume/cost of the chemical dehumidifier. I like Waterdowg's dehumidifier idea - we have one that includes a standard garden hose attachment which bypasses the reservoir - you could avoid drilling a hole in it that way and use it for the...

    Starbrite (or other) chemical dehumidifier

From previous posts you'll know I'm working on drying out my 1972 Sunfish. I installed two ventilation deck ports, each with vent holes/plugs. On their own, and with the crack repairs I've completed, I still think it would take months/years to dry out to a desired weight. However, I came...

    Harken vs. Ronstan

I meant to also ask- I'm thinking of the 40mm instead of the 57mm- says max diameter of 10mm- seems more than enough of my 7mm main sheet. Thoughts? Thanks!

    Grew Sunfish?

Tonight is my night for reviving old threads! What made me write here is that I too have a Grew Sunfish. I live near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Given the rear cockpit cubby and a bow stripe only (though the deck was painted, the original stripe was 'protected') I am thinking it's a 1972. It's...
