Cool idea! Let us know how it works. I made a clone of the mast float sold on Catalina direct with high buoyancy foam and sailcloth. I haven't capsized yet, but plan to (controlled!) when the water gets warm.

It would be easy to make, but if you want the easy route (as I chose) you can order from Catalina Direct. I Figured I'd make my next one!

Time will tell I guess! If they rip out, I'm sure you could fill with epoxy or something to get the screws to 'stick'! Best of luck!
