Does anyone know if there are current rules within the U.S. demanding that sailors be a member of a yacht club to participate in races at other clubs? I seem to recall something like this being the case a while back, but am not sure.

You can relax. There's no such rule (fortunately :)).
However, a Club may have races just for its members :)().

I think US Sailing tried to make this a rule some years ago, but it fell flat.

I formed a yacht club for an event a couple years back so I had something to write in for my registration. I had several new members before the regatta was over. Instead of membership fees I gave away beers to anyone that wanted to join.

Are you still accepting members??

yes please!

In terms of writing something in for the registration, I was thinking of using the name of a friend's "race team" he uses for local car racing. We're expanding the team into multiple vehicle types.

I'm glad there isn't an actual club membership rule. The closest one to me is almost an hour or more with traffic, and I never have time to get there since weekends I'm traveling to other regattas.

Scuttlebutt Sailing Club provides a membership card you can order (or just print) if you really need a card to race somewhere. They are "officially sanctioned by US Sailing" since 2001.
Clubs provide a sanctuary, a place where one can seek refuge and surround themselves with those of common interests. Well, SSC provides none of that, but we do satisfy a racing requirement regarding membership to a club recognized by a national authority.

Yacht clubs clubs are really nice because it gives you the ability to spend less money than you usually would when buying sailboats for sale or any boat for that matter. Even you don't have to deal with maintenance or managing a boat on your own when you join a boat club or a yacht club. You just need to think of all the cool activities you will be able to do with your family if you joined a yacht club.
