Name our Laser Regatta

I'm new Laser Fleet captain at my club, after some years of no organization. I'm thinking about planning a regatta where I invite other clubs for this year if I can manage it. I want to start with a name.

We are Leatherlips Yacht Club, (Leatherlips was a Wyandot Indian) on O'Shaughnessy Reservoir on the Scioto River on the outskirts of Columbus Ohio. We are also directly across from the Columbus Zoo. I can sometimes hear hyenas and other animals when I rig my boat.

Save us from the "O'Lips Regatta," because that's all I've come up with.

LYC Annual Laser Invitational.

It's not flashy or cute, but basic and straight to the point which is what you might need to draw attendance since your club has been out of the Laser business for years. Make sure to contact your Laser District Secretary to schedule around other laser events and for ideas to get the word out to the district members.

Thanks, Rob, but district 18 doesn't have a secretary right now. I guess I'll have to contact the National office to schedule around other events.

Hmmm, sounds like you're a canidate for D18 Secretary! No better way to get your fleet to grow that to drive that bus yourself!

I got it, "Get on the Bus" Laser Regatta.

Everyone is a comedian! I'd like to have a chance to sail my boat, so no thanks.

Hmm.. "I JUST WANT TO SAIL MY BOAT LASER REGATTA."

Hello Merrily,
Do you have many other Lasers in your Fleet? If not a bunch, no biggie. Check on the ILCA-NA web site and see what other districts are close to you... Email with the surrounding district's secretarys and see what weekends they have they're regatta's scheduled and find a slot for yours. Ask the other secretarys on helpful information about running and hosting a regatta. You might try to put out a notice on the Forum and on the Laser newsletter web site. See how much interest/commitment you can generate for your regatta. If there is no district secretary you might be able to call it your distirict's championship and generate grand prix points, but I assume that you'll have to run this by the Executive committee to get that established. If you can do that you might be able to get some of the traveling rock stars out or want-to-be rock stars.
The next thing I would tackle is a getting some sponsors.... Local sailing shops, West Marine, Wal-Mart, Local resturants, motels, anybody and everybody... etc. etc. etc.... See what kind of prizes you can get them to divy up. They might not be willing to pony up high dollar items but every little bit helps and tell them you give them free advertising in your regatta flyers and recognition at the event awards banquet, invite them to come out and see what Laser sailing is all about maybe even get them a ride on the committee or crash boats.
Another thought is calling some of the other local yatch clubs around you and finding out who sails Laser's at them... put out a challenge to them, see how many boats that might be coming or interested in coming. Make it at least a couple of months in advance so people can make plans to attend. Is there going to be camping allowed at the club? It all boils down to pushing and selling your regatta, getting the word out is priority one. What I have described is a ton of work... but it is like anything else what you put into it is what you'll get out of it and it will determine how successful your regatta is.
Best regards and good luck,

This sounds like a great blueprint for a big time regatta, but I maybe should have given some parameters about what I'm thinking of. Just inviting a few local clubs, at least the first year.

So what's a great name for my regatta that will start small?

if you want to be boring, and borrow a name,,,try spring fling,,,,summer fun,,,,,fall fest...........,,,but really 'LLO' has my vote!!

[Columbus] Wet Zoo regatta?

Seeing as how you are in Columbus, how about the Buckeye Laser Championship?
That would get confusing, 'cause there's another club, not too far away, called Buckeye Lake YC!

Thanks to everyone who suggested a name for our regatta. We have chosen the name, drum roll please, "Laserlips! Open Regatta" and the date is Saturday, October 15, 2005. Come out for a fine day of autumn racing in the midwest and maybe visit the world class Columbus Zoo. We are in Powell, Ohio on O'Shaughnessy Reservoir. Camping is permitted and the clubhouse restrooms with showers will be available. Our club's website is in the process of being updated, but you can get a view of us here: www.leatherlips.com, and you can contact me with questions at [email protected], or call me at 614-262-3798. Please feel free to use the forum's private message feature.

P.S. More info to come by mid-June. I just want to get on your calendar.
