NA's in Wrightsville Beach. Who's Going?

OK, time to sound off. Who's going to this one? I just sent in my registration and I'm getting major excited! It's been about 12 years since I've sailed off that beach and the memories still remain. One primo place to sail!

Tell us more - why is it such a great place to sail?

And what is wrong with the parking - just not enough space? You mean we need to get to the club real early each day?

Any other old geezers going?

It's great because it is true open ocean sailing. Nothing to block the sea except Bermuda, (a ways off the beach). Winds in April will be around 15-20ish, (average) w/big swells to surf! I'm an apprentice geezer at 38. The parking could be tough, but in April the real beach season has not yet kicked in so it should not be so bad. The club has a small parking lot and then you're up and down the side of the main drag. Get there early, (like us old geezers are used to) and you'll be fine.

It's pretty much as Rob describes. The club is located right on the beach in a scenic area, and the courses are run out in the Atlantic Ocean. However the club itself has a tiny parking lot that isn't really large enough for a big event like this, and there is limited public parking nearby.

Granted when I visited the club it was in August at the peak of the tourist season. In April there will probably be fewer total people around.

Though I haven't been racing much lately I had planned to go to this. I made plans to train and sail all winter in preparation. Here it is with a little over a month to go, and I've had the boat our maybe twice and haven't been exercising, so I think I'm going to pass on attending.

Do you lauch off of the beach? also, will i not need my new sails, because of the extreme wind conditions? How will the water be at this time (late april), wetsuit or what?
thanks

launching off the beach is dangerous. The intercoastal waterway is on the other side. We launch there and sail out via a nearby inlet. I'll have a new sail w/me. Don't need a wetsuit. If you have neoprene hiking shorts, booties, and a spray top you should be fine. However, a dip in the water is gonna be chilly. I'd expect air temps to be in the 70's w/water temp around the high 60's.

I can't say that since I've never sailed in santa monica.

so your saying it would be kinda like midwinters west in santa monica bay, except with less parking and more wind?

Go anyway!

I haven't gotten fit or practiced all winter so I think I'll skip the US Nationals in April.......then because I didn't sail in April I won't be ready for the D11 Grand Prix in May....and, oh shit, I can't go to the Great Lakes Champs in June because I never got tuned up in May.....and then I daren't show my face at Sail Newport in July 'cos I still won't be fit.....and without the practice in Newport I may as well skip going to CORK in August... and then what's the point of doing the New England Laser Masters in September when everyone else will be so fit after sailing all summer...and hey, the Masters Worlds in October would be great but I'll be so out of practice.

I will definitely join the gym in November. Then next year....... ;)

The 2000 Atlantic Coasts and the 2001 Nationals were held at Wrightsville Beach...I believe in early May both times. Parking was NOT a problem either time as it is not their prime season. The sailing is awesome; the hospitality superb. If I recall correctly nuclear breeze was lacking in 2001, but was present at times for the Atlantic Coasts. When the breeze kicked int the waves were epic. Get off your butt and go to the regatta to experience it yourself.

Hello Laser Forum,

Reminder about Laser US Champs.
Carolina Yacht Club
Wrightsville Beach, NC.
April 21-24 , 2005

Check website for info and online registration.

As Ted Morgan explained , parking is usually not a big problem in the
off season of the club. We have 125 parking spots in the parking lot.
We are also getting additional parking spaces on the street for RC.

Hopefully we will have some waves to surf.

Usually it will crank between 15-25, but you never know if a big fat high pressure system is in. Like anywhere else when that happens, no breeze.

Hi,

Is anyone driving from Wrightsville Beach to New England who has room to bring up another Laser? I'm in VT, but CT or MA would work.

Thanks,

Al Russell
