This is the fundamental question:
Should "practice" sails be used for racing?

By practice sail, I mean one of the several sails produced by non-builder approved sail makers.

The class rules say: "If you race a Laser that has a change or addition not allowed by the class rules you will be disqualified from the race."

So, what's a "race" and what's "racing"?

Does a "race" need to be sanctioned by the Laser class to be a "race"?

What if the sailing instructions say the class rules apply?

What if the sailing instructions specifically allow "practice" sails?

If the sailing instructions don't mention the class rules, and the regatta permits the used of practice sails, can I slap a Laser sticker on my Finn and show up for racing? Can I use my Rooster 8.1 rig? Can you stop me if I do? What would you argue?

Why should "practice" sails be allowed in any racing whether it is informal or not?

No one that I know of has used one at our club racing. Few of our members travel to events so club racing is their top outing. In practice I guess if someone new to the class or racing uses one whilst trailing at the back of the fleet we won't worry. However if our 'Top Club Gun' bought a new one each year rather than the class legal I guess that would produce a different reaction!

No.

Maybe start a poll to summarise the results (turn this thread into a poll if possible - moderators/admin ?) or start another. Otherwise I broadly agree with GBR 134 (how many Lasers and where is BSSC as I'm considering moving to King's Lynn and remember doing Fireball Open's there many years ago; as well as at Snettisham Beach).

Ian, BSSC would definitely be the best club for any Laser sailor based in the King's Lynn area and yes we di run F/Ball opens we used to do the qualifiers off the beach. The club probably has @ 60 Laser 1s in total but peak turnouts of @ 20 on the most popular w/ends and average about 7 - 8 , however we are working oni and the average is climbing again - if only my wife would let me out more! PM me for more details or check out http://www.bssc.net/

I am not sure what you mean by "racing practice" in the poll.

Well, for example, our Laser sailors try to meet mid-week whenever the wind is good, and last night we did practice starts and ran a few races. This was an informal get together. Just an e-mail from the fleet captain (me) saying "Ya wanna sail?" Our junior coach set up a start line and did two minute starts from a crash boat. Sometimes we practice roll tacking or tune, etc., all with an eye for prep for club and regatta racing. (The weatherman got it wrong though. Light air again.)

I think that falls in the category of practice practice, not racing practice. For the purposes of this discussion I think we need to keep a clear distinction between organized racing, and practice of all types. Perhaps you could remove the "racing practice" category from the poll and edit the "non-racing practice" category to include "group practice."

(I think the line between this type of practice and club racing could become a fuzzy one for some small fleets.)

So choice 1 could read solo practice and choice 2 group practice? We already have people who have checked the original categories in these.

I tried to change the poll to do that, but it's not giving me that option now. It did when I set the poll up. Sorry. If this is very important to you I can delete the poll and start over, but I'd rather not!

OK. A vote for group practice includes a vote for solo practice. Likewise a vote for club racing includes votes for solo and group practice, and so on. I want to change my vote to a vote for group practice.

If you want to vote for more than one option (i.e. in a cumulative fashion), go here.

I changed Chris's vote to group practice, but it doesn't and won't show his name. So if you check into that, that's why the names won't equal the votes on the group practice poll option. Fat-n-old is not so big that he gets two votes!
