I keep my sail rolled in a simple bag that costs about $30 from APS. I recently decided that it was important to keep the roll stiff to avoid additional creases and added a 4 inch diameter perforated PVC pipe from Home Depot for about $6. The pipe is sold as drainage pipe and comes with two rows of holes drilled along its length that will be good for ventilation. The pipe is fairly thin walled and is made of white PVC. I just had to cut about 2 feet off the end and rig up some scrap rope to tie the clew and cunningham grommets to the tube. Total cost <$40. The Colie version sells for $229, including $90 for shipping (the bag alone sells for $119).

I used to get all my stuff from Colie about 10 years ago when I raced there, but they are definitely ridiculously overpriced nowadays.

Are you asking what we think would be best, or what we actually do?

I suppose what you actually do. It's not a big issue but I assume that most people would ideally buy rolled and keep rolled - just other factors tend to prevent that.

I'm not quick and definitely not quick today as I cannot yet see the combination I've missed. Please let me know so I can get some sleep tonight.

bag sells for $139, and $90 worth of shipping if you decide to get it with a tube, which from my view is a ridiculous thing to do, as you can just go and get a tube yourself, which is much cheaper.I still beleive it's the best sail bag available.

The Colie bag sells for $119 (without the tube) and $139 with the tube ($139 + $90 = $229 which is what I meant by "including $90 for shipping").

The Colie bag is well made and does include a full length zipper...but charging $20 for a $6 piece of PVC is a bit steep.

That said, I'd still rather pay $30 for the bag (APS) and $6 for the tube (Home Depot).

ahhh yes, just saw that, my mistake, but yea, thats why I buy it without the tube

Throw it away after use.*

*Only applies to those Laser sailors engaged in Olympic Campaigns like Ross B with $5,000 worth of sail inventory and nowhere to store it. ;)

Seems very expensive for a sail bag. Mine is a tube with an opening at one end, no full length zips and its dead easy to get the sail (on a pipe) in and out. To purchase from PSE (UK) is US$35 (I converted £ to $).

That's what I have...a $30 bag from APS and a $6 tube from Home Depot.

Folded and Folded.

It is ancient, wrinkled, saggy and baggy like my nana.

Every time I fold it on the slipway tarmac it picks up a new splotch of greeny-brown swan shit. It is starting to look like a camouflaged army surplus tarp.

Sail Bag

I keep my sail rolled in a simple bag that costs about $30 from APS.

That seems like a good way to go. Also, an Etchells mainsail bag fits a rolled Laser sail. J/24 mainsail bag and V15 mainsail bag are too short by about the length of a factory Laser sail 'sack'.

Rolling lasersails (when not on the mast obviously) will never make the sail perform better =P
It does make the sail look newer though which might always be nice ;)

Hello:
I have appreciated your perspecxtive on many Forum issues. Can you tell me how to roll my new sail (Laser Pro)? It came in a bag (folded).

Also how do you effectively get it on and off the mast without worrying about the ground surface scuffing it up etc?

Generally I lay the mast down the centreline of the boat, put the sail upside down on top of it (battens in), feed the open end of the luff pocket onto the top of the mast and pull it on. Once it gets to half way I lift the mast off the boat and pull at the same time. Bit of forearm strength required but there you go. Taking it off is similar but easier.

Have you guys also noticed that if you roll a sail in the northern hemisphere it will unroll the exact opposite way than if you rolled it in the southern hemisphere.

Not a lot of people know that.

Thanks Chainsaw. I imagine that you arepulling the sheet over the mast in a way that it is unfolding over it's length as you pull it on. Is that right? Mineis still quite stiff making this a bit more difficult as it likes to hard crease as I pull it over itself. Am I understaning you correctly?

Mine as well. I need to have the sail "tube" and mast pretty well in line with each other to be able to pull the sail on. If the sail "tube thing" is a bit folded or creased the mast will stop. Mine is a fairly new sail (although some of the stitching in the read that goes round the mast is already broken).

Yeah that's the idea. I suppose you could equally lay the sail out along the length of the boat and insert the mast instead.
