Spring is coming! The boats are getting restless!

I see buds on the bush outside my den window. Sparky is calling to me...let's go sailing.
I'm not sure if the local lake is thawed yet. I might try to get in an early season sail after I patch my drysuit. Because I just found out I need rotator cuff surgery and won't be able to do anything active for at least 6 weeks afterwards...waaahhhhh!

On a completely unrelated note, I just found myself musing on what a Sunfish spinnaker would look like...

I wanted to go sailing over the recent spring break. The weather has been unusually cold, windy, and rainy since the end of December. I might just wait until I get back to Wisconsin this June.

Sailed the Russian River on Saturday the 15th. Pushed off the beach at 8:30 am and pulled the boat at 2 pm. I recently discovered a river height gauge at the Jenner bridge which is 1.8 miles upstream of the river mouth. This is real time, up to the minute data and it's archived which now allows me to know what the tide height in the river is going to be and when.

This river height gauge is a much better source than the Russian River Mouth or Jenner Beach tide charts. According to the river height gauge, Saturday was going to have a "high" high tide at 8 am at about 5.4 feet and a "low" low tide at 3:30 pm at 0.5 feet. By the way, that's really low.

Armed with this new river tides data I actually turned around and headed back down the river earlier than I usually would have because I knew the river was going to empty. It didn't disappoint. I only shot video after I was done sailing and on the way home, stopping to film the Cobble Bars area. I think this was the lowest I've ever seen the river. Here's some video.

Cheers,

- Andy

That is low, and I remember the second time we sailed the river we had to walk the boats through that area. I'm a bit surprised because after all the rain, I thought it would be high. Was there so much water that it busted open the mouth of the river and now it's draining more?

we were late getting in this year. but first outting on friday. zero wind but the kid had fun climbing from boat to boat, and sitting on the bow through boat wake while underway. avg just under 2 knots over 2 hours. we hadnt even compounded the boats yet. (did mine today :))

Its been a cooler than normal spring on the Georgia coast this year it seems like. Finally got out on the motor boat for a little cruising and saw a J/24, Sunfish, and 2 Laser/ILCA's on Sunday. I wanted to get them all close together so I could take a picture for Sailing Forums. ;)
