Quick Release Boom - Boom Tubing Size

Hello,
I found the specs for the boom tubing at Rig Rite, it looks like it’s 1 1/2 inches which is 38.1 mm.
I’m looking at the bicycle seat post quick release levers and they look just like the boom quick release levers.
but I’m trying to determine the size I should order.

Anyone out there know which one works best?
Anyone used a bike seat quick release lever for this?
Any CONS ?

there’s a range of sizes of these bike quick releases..

Thanks!

Nearly all the bicycle seat post QR units with an aluminum cam work in a Sunfish. I think the factory threads are 1/4"-20 that is a little over 6mm. Seat QR units are usually 5mm and drop right in. I think mine is a Trek system 3, but they are all similar.

Well, I've got a quick-release here that I actually bought on this forum and it will not thread into my gooseneck, so they can't all be the same.

Sounds like you got one with a 6mm shaft. Just drill the old threads out of the gooseneck with a 1/4 " drill bit. Don't worry about it being permanent. Once you have an adjustable quick release, you will never go back to using a sharp screwdriver next to your sail.

Yes, it's 6mm. It was just my first season with my Sunfish and I was hesitant to go boring out threads on main component but I'm past that now :D

This boom clamp is a little bit pricey, but the bushing is bronze and the “bolt” is stainless steel.
Currently $36.95 including shipping. On eBay

So far it is the only one I can find with a stainless “bolt”. Many colors!!

Still need to measure the length I need to order, I haven’t done that yet but the brand is Wolftooth.
Their bike components appear to be quality also.

I ordered another brand on Amazon I received a 6mm,the cup assembly and the cam pivot is very flimsy and the “bolt” is not stainless...will return it.

I’m trying to establish whether or not it has a nut on the other side or whether it threads into the other half of the clamp,
i’m not sure yet.... but either way I think I’m going to get it due to the stainless construction and the bronze Cam saddle.
Made in Minneapolis, looks like a neat team of people making these parts.

I will add a 316 stainless nyloc nut and washer if needed.

Google found a photo of the backside of the clamp.
It appears there’s a stainless nut.

I’ve got an email out to Wolftooth in regard to the length of the bolt.
Will post that information as soon as I get it.

A Chinese link sent me two "bike clamps" for $1.98. :)

IMHO, the bolt part (at 6mm) is too thin for enough "squeeze" :( but I'm going to substitute a short bolt and give it "a college-try" later this Spring.

Look for a local guy fixing bikes as a side business.

I have given a few bikes I picked out of the trash to my local bike guy. So when I called asking if he had any seat post quick release he showed up with a box and I was able to choose which I wanted.

So look for used bike guys.

In a saltwater environment the bronze gooseneck will have a galvanic corrosion party, over time, with the stainless, especially if it is not marine grade. And while tinkering with the gooseneck it might be a good time to put a piece of electrical tape, or Pro Gaff tape, between the gooseneck and the boom, to prevent dissimilar metal corrosion there.

not trying to undercut anyone....8 bucks for 2 from amazon. not stainless. i might not use stainless anyway in case of galling. but test fits in the shop pretty well.

its 8mm. so bore to 5/16

Out of curiosity, is this to make adjustments of gooseneck positioning easier for adjusting sail position for different wind conditions?
