You've asked two questions here. Are you being homophobic, and is it bad luck to rename a boat? First, I doubt the boat was given that name as a homosexual reference, so maybe you are being homophobic. On the other hand, a reference to falling behind sounds like bad psychology to me, and it isn't such a great name. (One could say that it is a bum name, but then one might have to endure all kinds of bad jokes and maybe even flames.)
Lasers need happy, flashy, or fast names. I am a little bit superstitious, and so when I renamed a boat, I took precautions. Someone told me to not let the transom be empty, so I had the new decal ready to install and did so as soon as I got the old name off. Our Starwind 223 went from being Currency to Evening Star, due to our intent to not race her but to have some relaxed cruising. If you want a nameless boat, I say light a candle and say a little prayer to keep the evil spirits away, because that is what the sailing lore is about. The bad luck comes from evil spirits inhabiting the boat. So if you don't believe in evil spirits, then forget about it. I'm not so sure I believe in evil spirits, my actions were "just in case."
The thing is, you don't want to tempt fate and annoy the gods (even if you don't really believe in them). It's better to be safe than sorry when dealing with potential bad juju. So having a de-naming and naming ceremony is an important safety precaution, just like never, ever, under any circumstances having bananas on a boat.

PS Yes, sounds like you are being homophobic with the boat name. It's certainly a slow sounding name but unless it's accompanied by some obscene graphics it sounds like you're reading way more into the name than you should!
I know not every one names there boats, most just use there sail#. I just got a 1988 laser and i really want to name it, but i have absolutely no ideas, and i could really use some help. so if you have any ideas just submit them.
who are the other three manufacteurers? where are they located?
