Sponsors on sails

I want to put my company logo on my radial sail and possibly a full rig. I was thinking above the window on the starbord side. I had one of anna tunnicliffes sail with a logo there and looked pretty good.
So whats the class rules on sizes? And whats the best sticker material for a logo?

I believe the best material is the same material sail numbers are made from. However, I'm currently trying to source this as I work in a print shop and have a wide format ink jet printer to print the log with, but trying to find out what the material is has proven difficult. Sail makers don't want to share and my regular material suppliers don't have a clue what I'm talking about..;-()

I made my Sunfish logo using adhesive backed sail insignia cloth. Would that work?

What about purely decorative graphics?
The class rules say nothing about this, so they are illegal :D
In practice, you can decorate your boat in any way that doesn't break any other rule. As sails go, I'd say any "extra" graphics shouldn't interfere with the required markings. Probably best to stick to the legal advertising areas even if you're not advertising anything.

these are dacron sails right? a local sign shop said they could make me some vinyl stickers that should work. but i would rather sail material. the tunnicliff sail i have has vinyl kswiss logos where the usa flags usually are and they are peeling and chipping. but the sail cloth carmuse logo above the window is fine

Class rule 10: Advertising, including competitor advertising, is permitted in accordance with World Sailing Regulation 20 – Advertising code; except that the sail window shall be kept free of advertising or other graphic material.

So pretty much as long as i dont interfear with the window, numbers or country code im good to go?

Regulation 20.2.6 says: Advertising on sails shall be clearly separated from national letters and sail numbers and from Class insignia unless it is part thereof.. (Should have read it myself before my previous post :D )

I'd say "clear separation" should be at least the minimum distance between the sail numbers, on both sides. If you go twice that (10 cm) or more, it'll even look good.

As some are aware I've been inquiring on "how" to find durable, light weight, crisp ways to get a promotional ad on a sail. Well....I think I may have it figured out. We took delivery of a new printer this week and I ran some adhesive backed sail repair material through it. This weekend I'll apply these labels to my laser sail and go out to test durability, (capsize, luffing, so forth) and opacity. I'm a little concerned they could "wash out" with bright sun against the sail making them hard to see, but the material looks opaque enough. Also, according to the material supplier this stuff was designed long before there were printers around that you could attempt to process it through so he had no idea this could be done. This leaves us with more work to do to make sure the top coat and adhesive on this stuff doesn't screw up our $30k new investment! The ruler across the top is 12" to show current scale so while these are small we have the capability to print up to 63" wide by a nearly unlimited length. I'm encouraged so far, but stay tuned.....

Can you print on the material that people use for chafe protection on genoas and mainsails where the sails hit the spreaders and stanchions? I material should not come off the sail and is pretty white.

That's what this is.

Actually, that material is either thicker or multiple layers of this stuff. In the process of getting multiple material samples from the supplier to check out now.

For a durability point of view, I'd figure a sponsor logo would need to last a couple of regattas?

If you're on a circuit yes. But a lot of folks want to put their own business logo on mainsails for long term use. You can also use it to put your boat name on the sail or any kind of cool 4 color graphic, (like the square piece shows) and remember up to 63" wide and basically unlimited length. For the large stuff I'm working with a local sailmaker as it's tricky stuff to work with and you need a large flat surface to lay the sails out on. Some of these would install in multiple/separate panels.

Does ILCA Rule 10 make an old Radial sail, which was manufactured with '5.7' in outline graphics on the window, illegal?

Good question actually. The window should be kept free from any "graphic material", but this was builder-provided. It's part of the age-old (and still unanswered) question, "is everything that comes from a builder legal by definition?"

But that's a really old sail. 1993 or so? It's of course possible that there was no "clean-window" rule then...
