Hull ID 1892? and a few questions

Hi all, I purchased my first sailboat last fall, though I've been sailing for 30+ yrs ;). Browsing through this wonderful forum, I think I have one of the 1971-3 manufactured boats, since the only number on the boat is "1892" under the bow eye and it has wooden side rails, tiller, and rudder. There are access ports in the bow and stern and the mast step has been reinforced. The mast hole holds water, which is a good sign. I plan on removing the side rails to sand, varnish, and replace the screws that fasten it to the boat, and I'd like to repair the outer coat of the boat since a few spots are rubbed down to the fiberglass and the outer rim of the boat seems to be non-water-tight (that outer lip has exposed wood).
My questions (so far) are:
Does the mast reinforcement look adequate?
Are the trailer options basically Kitty Hawk or TrailerX? I've been trying to find a used trailer or a kit to make one, rather than spend $1200 to have a Kitty Hawk shipped to me.
I currently have the boat stored upside-down on two sawhorses with rags between the deck and sawhorses to help spread the forces on the deck. Is this ok for storage? I plan on storing the boat on an appropriate trailer once I obtain one.

I'm sure I'll have more questions once I start working on the repairs, and sail it for the first time this spring!

Thanks,

Brandon

Yes. Hull # 1892 and it's an early 70's boat. The mast step has been repaired on the top and bottom. Does not look like "great" work, but looks solid enough for now. The good news is you have an inspection port to keep an eye on it.

Sounds like you are storing it correctly. One saw horse should be near the back end of the cockpit and the other up near the mast step.

You have the best two trailer options pegged. Finding a used one is difficult. I ended up with two boats to get my used trailex as it had a laser attached to it....

1892 is probably an early 1972 boat.

The mast step reinforcement looks... weird. Any idea what the red and silver-coloured materials are? A couple layers of fibreglass around the tube/bottom joint would certainly count as "adequate". Plenty of good, illustrated examples on this forum.

What's that second fairlead doing there next to the one for the cunningham?

LaLi, I think your description (weird) of the "repair" is charitable. :)

Brue21, assuming the inspection port is there, an hour or two and a little money for materials will get you a big improvement.

The Kitty Hawk and Trailex trailers ARE kits. Or were in the case of the KItty Hawk as they are no longer made. The other kit option is the Right-On, which is still several hundred dollars.

Thanks for all the replies! I think the red/silver material is some kind of resin or epoxy. I will put mast step reinforcement on my to-do list for this boat, probably in the fall since I'll be spending my free time sailing it ;). I have no idea what the second fairlead is for, will find out this summer I suppose. As for trailers, I like that the Right-On has a separate dolly, but the Trailex SUT-250L (configured for Laser I, correct?) looks nice too. Either way it'll be worth it so I can sail both of the nearby reservoirs (Spruce Run & Round Valley) as well as trips to LBI as often as possible. I can't wait!!

Just remove it and fill the screw holes with gelcoat filler.

You might want to post more pictures of your fittings in case there are more strange arrangements that you should change.

Sorry, should have specified. The Right-On does not come with a dolly. You have to supply your own.

As for the Trailex, yes the SUT-250L is customer designed for the Laser. You can use it as a dolly if you wish, but it is a bit bulky on steep ramps.

Agreed on using one of the trailers as a dolly. Only if you're on a low incline ramp and in fresh water. They would be a beast to pull across sand and you don't want to dip the hubs/springs in salt water.
