Measurement Certificate

I am a Laser sailor looking to move up into a J24 and have been looking at a few used boats.
Can anyone explain the rules regarding the Measurement Certificate? Specifically, does a boat I purchase need to have one? If I purchase a J24 with a certificate; do I have to update it; i.e. have it 'measured' again?
One of the boats I am looking at has the certificate dated 9 years ago/2 owners ago; is this still valid if the current owner has not updated the certificate? The Measurement Form, Preamble #5 states "change of ownership invalidates the certificate; if the current owner did not update the certificate, how difficult is it for me to update and obtain a current one?
Thanks for any help!

I bought a boat that had been measured for a few reason's. Then I knew I was good for any regatta. You can have it changed into your name through the Class Web site. There is a form and I think it's $15.00. I would buy only a boat that had been measured. Reach out to me if you need more info.

Thanks Cliff,
Although I will likely use the boat day sailing, I would like to be able to participate in the local Corinthian Club sailing events....and if we are competitive J24 events.

Hey Dirk,
Even if your buying a boat just to sail and want to do a race every so often buy a boat that has been measured is the best starting point. I wanted one that had been measured, had the blades and bottom done and needed corrector weight's. You want to take the boat out of the equation on being competitive meaning if you don't do well then you need to improve and make better decisions rather then were slow because the boat is slow. Just my thoughts.
