Two questions for Miami area laser sailors

First, thanks for your input hope you all had a nice vacation.

I'll be around in the Miami olympic week and i plan to order some Laser parts. Mostly, spars, sails and rudders/centerboards. It may be in large quantities. Where in the area should I look to. Of course, I'm looking for a cheap place.

Also, does anybody know if it is possible in the States to get australian made spars (top secions mostly). I heard http://www.apsltd.com/ may have them, do you sually order to them

A final question would be if you know of a good place where to get composites (epoxis, carbon fiber and some good hardware). This is for my brother a pro Tornado sailor.

Pls, let me know, I'll be around in 10 days. Thanks for your welcomed advice.

I would personally go to Gulfstream Marine because they are nice people to work with and have good service.

i too would recomend Gulfstream Marine. I recently purchased an 06 laser there at a great price and got many free-bees. Contact Eamonn or Tim Slater when you get there.

Best of luck,
Brendan

Just curiosity Brendan, can you tell me how much that laser cost you?

Also, do you know the address of Gulfstream maarine and if it is far away from the Coral reef yatch club?

Thanks

Centurio, for the Laser Radial Pro with Storm hull and deck covers and a Seitech dolly plus extra top section and boom it came to a total of $4,977. And yes, thats supposed to be a 4! And im aware that the full rig would only cost another 100 dollars if you didnt get the radial. Also, the adress on the invoice is 3470 NW 7th Street, Miami Fl. 33125. Good luck!
Brendan

Eamonn's phone(Gulfstream) is (305) 649-6001. Also, Andy from Tackleshack will probably have a van at the USSC Miami during OCR. He's got everything Laser.

You got an 06' laser brendan. so did colleen. i wish i were you guys. another point is that they don't have a retail store and if you call them and ask them to deliver it while you are visiting a regatta they probably will because they are probably also making other deliveries to that regatta especially if it is one like the OCR.

haha, yeah, a gift from the parents for my birthday! you have no idea how stoked i am to get out there and whoop some ass in it! mine and colleens are different though, thank god! see ya at JO's at martin county SC! later sam!

Not to highjack this thread but PressureDrop what is the Laser fleet (and other dinghys) like in the Palm Beach area? We were visiting friends in North Palm last weekend and I might be looking for a retirement villa down there soon. Thanks Scott

Well, my family and I are currently members at the Palm Beach Sailing Club where they have a great coach and a great juniors program. There are currently 2 Radials and 4 4.7's on that team. However for full rigs there are about 12 Masters, etc... Also, theres many yacht and sailing clubs south of here with HUGE fleets. I've been to regatta's where there have been up to 125 boats in a single fleet (4.7, Radial, Full). Also, there is a small Snipe fleet and a decent sized Megabyte and 420 fleet. If there is anymore information you would like, feel free to ask me or Sailor327, he too is a local.

Hope all is well and good luck!
Brendan

Hi guys,

I wonder if you know if Gulfstream Marine has a web site or email. I've been googling with no success so far. Again, thanks a bunch.

Hey, exactly what kind of a deal did you get? There is a place here in Miami (the newest Vanguard dealership on S.W. 54th ave...I think?) that is offering '06 Lasers that have just sailed in the Orange Bowl series, for about $4,300 each. I was thinking about getting one of those VS. one about 7 years old--to get my feet wet in lasers...

Oh for petes sake...That IS eammom's store--sorry 'bout the spelling of his name...He says he has some funky-colored ones there too...yellow and green or some other wierd coloration....

wait eammom is going to have a retail store or is it just a warehouse. because i know the oldowners and all they had was a warehouse and a van.

Well it IS a store. I went there and introduced myself and he took me on a tour. He has a large room where he makes sails and another large space that he uses to work on boats (he had an etchel on a hoist when I was there)...He also rents that space to a guy who specializes in ropes and such....

I think it is on s.w. 50-something street....

He had 2 Lasers out back when I was there. I guess he will store the ones he got over xmas inside. He said he was buying 15 for the season....

BTW, I wonder if it would be worth starting my own Laser dealership. I don't know what the markup for Lasers would be...have to do some research. Not too many places around that are just Laser-oriented. I should start a thread on this.

how about just a retail sailing or dinghy sailing store in general. essentially everyone in miami has to go to the catalogs if they want any gear, or just wait until they're driving through tampa.

You've got to be kidding! I thought that only happened in the middle of Ohio.

Actually, after careful consideration...it is NOT a store!!...lol....sorry. He has a few desks in the 'front office'...and those other 2 rooms I wrote about.....

A local 'dingy-sailing' store (good suggestion- Darb) where you could shop for all the necessary gear--would be good. Of course, the only drawback is that you have to buy all the gear first!!!! How much interest would there really be? Maybe some serious 'poll-ing' is needed here

the sailing population is very large in miami with nowhere to buy anything except for west marine basically. Add to that the transient sailing population that we get november through february with all the olympic aspirants, orange bowl and midwinters participants, jaguar cup and bacardi cup sailors, and then this year tornado north americans, 49er north americans, and womens keelboat north americans along with miami race week sailors and you'd probably only have to be open from november to march to see a profit. I've really never been able to figure out why miami doesnt have a store like aps or team1

it is true that we dont have a store but if you call gulfstream marine and tell them you need something they will probably meet you at the club you sail at or and at any regatta you are doing. there is also tackle shack but i dont really deal with them.

last I checked tackle shack was in tampa and gulfstream marine didnt keep stuff in stock because of the overhead costs so essentially they're a catalog. why does a sailing center like miami not have a colie sails pro shop or a sailing pro shop or a west coast sailing or an aps type store?

Uhhh what IS an 'aps type store'? I suppose I could Google it..You are right about 'where are all the nautical shops?'... Ft. Lauderdale has quite a good selection of general boating stores...

When I moved here to Miami beach in 1995 I did not understand why there were no fishing-type stores, or really ANYTHING water-related...HELLO?? Miami Beach???? All we still have are some cheesy stores where the employees and owners stand outside waiting for customers, then they follow you in....talk about uncomfortable....never shopped in those stores since...

I know retail quite well, but I don't think I could afford to get a really good place going. Anything less and It wouldn't be worth it. I just started a Yacht maintenance business and that is taking up some time. I can visualise a nice-size shop catering to 5 or 6 classes of dingys.

As much as it would be nice to set up, a so-called 'catalogue shop' is a much cheaper way to go. After a lot of research it would be possible to keep some popular 'core' products on the shelves so you could generate a niche crowd that way....anything else they'd have to buy catalogue-style. The problem with catalogue is that the prices are virtually the same so it has to be with other services that you will be attracting (and hopefully keeping) customers for your business....

A website is the cheapest way to go, I guess. The advantage of opening a site where people buy is that since I live in Miami, they could buy the product and pick it up in Miami during a race week or whenever they are in town. Of course I would have free delivery, for example if the order is over such and such, and within a reasonable distance, e.t.c. e.t.c. I could advertise the site at races and in magazines and all the dingy associations, blah blah... all kinds of ideas...I'll have to think further on it...

Keep the ideas coming..I'm getting more interested as we go on here!
