Hi All,
I was driving down the road, I stumbled upon a Capri 14.2. I instantly fell in love with her and on an impulse...took her home right away.

Prior to "Impulse", I have sailed a Hobie Holder 14, a 16' Hobie Cat, Sunfish and various other small sailboats.

Can't wait to get Impulse to the lake and take her out. She is a real beauty!

I am glad that you like her. It was my pleasure to have built her more appealing than I have seen any other 14.2. I hope that you get may years of pleasure from her ! Please send me a pic when you get the full color sails up . If you get the desire, she would look even better with the faux teak decks!

I just installed the Yellow Jib today so now she is under full color!
Best news was that the yellow jib was a Luff Wire already so there was no need to sew anything.

I'll adding new line to the roller though so it doesn't need to get extended. Right now when I unfurl it, the end is up on the nose. I'll have that completed tomorrow.

Also changed out some of the lines to complete your color coordination theme so now Red Lines go to Red Pulleys, Green to Green, White to White and yep, I even did the Boom Vang...line and wire so now that's Orange to Orange.

I am thinking of adding either a topping lift for the boom or a home made Boom kicker, but it looks like the Boom kicker would be in the way of the Boom Cover. One or the other will be done tomorrow and then the only thing left is to sail her which I've already been doing. She's a blast to sail and real easy to get her up on the rail though Lexie (my Yorkie) isn't to fond of that.

No teak deck - yet, but I might add some non slip foam to the seats for Lexie to have a more secure grip (like this)

and I'll be adding an electric trolling motor instead that I can store under the nose when not in use, but have available when I need it so the British Seagull is up for sale along with the spare boom, racing sails, center board and cubby.

All in all, Impulse is everything I needed for my sudden change of plans.

Larry - I took my "new" C14.2 for its maiden voyage yesterday and learned that it doesn't point up very well...at least not what I was accustomed to with my C22. At this time of year, the direction of the prevailing wind on the lake makes it very difficult to bring the boat back to the slip. It made me strongly consider adding a small motor but the boat doesn't have a motor mount. I saw that you have a motor mount for sale, but your post above makes me wonder if you don't need one for a trolling motor. Is that correct, or are you just changing to a different style of mount?

Hi Larry,

If you are using a gas powered motor, you need a mount...like I am selling.
If you are just mounting a light weight trolling motor you simply need a pad mounted to the outside.
It can be wood or plastic.

Its purpose is to spread out the load of the mount.

As for pointing, do you have the shrouds tight? shes sails better with a looser shroud and the mast raked back a bit.

That's great news because I've been looking at trolling motors. I didn't want the expense or weight of a gas motor.

Thanks for the tip. My main concern initially was to get the boat in the water. I'll loosen the shrouds a bit and see if that helps.

WaterDawg - I bought a Minnkota trolling motor and would like to use it this weekend. However, I'm still not sure about how to mount it. You mounted a pad on the outside of the transom, but the clamps are inside the boat and would appear to need a pad to avoid damaging the transom. Did you drill holes and bolt the pad to the transom? Would some sort of glue/adhesive work to keep the pad in place?

Thanks.

Larry

I mount an electric trolling motor mounted to the transom of my Capri. I place a piece of plywood on the outside of the transom and a piece of plastic cutting board on the inside of the transom to protect the transom from damage by the trolling motor clamp. I have not mounted them to the transom yet, and I may not permanently attach them to the boat.
I bought a small electric wheelchair battery off of ebay that I secure to the rudder elastic strap eyebolt with a rope. That keeps the battery from going to the bottom of the lake when I capsize.

Thanks, Doug. I really didn't want to start drilling holes in the transom. The motor on my Catalina 22 had a cable that attached to the motor mount "just in case" so I'll come up with something similar for this trolling motor.

I bought a 24DC marine battery last night...just hope the weight will be worth it because I don't look forward to hauling it home to recharge. I don't plan to race...just cruise and get my grand kids hooked on sailing!
