Did any of the Masters have fun in Fortaleza?

Did the US Masters use their own boats (if so, how much is the freight approximately to such a far away location), or did the people charter Brazilian boats? If the latter, how did that work out; cost etc?

Ignorance is bliss (sometimes).

That really was a great article. It just inspires me even more to hurry up and get that Laser I've been blabbing about for about a month now....Actually, it has been about a month since I even HEARD of the Laser.

whats life like under a rock?

What's that? Life rocks? I agree, life rocks! Actually, I only heard about a Laser last summer when I started looking for a single handed dinghy. I read Vanguard's website and took a chance. No regrets, despite a boom upside the head and a swim yesterday.

Great write-ups of the events. Right now, I'm glad I can sail vicariously in such wind, though I'd be scared poopless to actually try it--for now. Like Merrily and others who have recently researched and gotten into sailing Lasers, despite our and our friends' and families' better judgment, I have fallen head over heels for sailing the Laser, in my case a Rad (somebody's got to try to coin that as the diminutive form of Radial). Over the year and a half I have been learning to race, which is itself the best way to learn to sail, I have finally made it to first place in a season-series at Seabrook SC, me who usually is lucky to finish since I have broken the habit of running the course incorrectly. With nine races down and three to go, I have the lowest point score. The funny thing is that so many of the other sailors who USUALLY leave me ship-lengths in the rear haven't sailed all of the races, which puts me at an advantage, a large one it seems. Even if my place otherwise would be lower, it makes me feel great knowing that in a year and a half I have gone from a guy who had literally only sailed a few times in his life to a keen, persistent, and progressing apprentice. Someday, perhaps, I'll enjoy the Masters' Worlds as much as the guys who penned the reports linked here.

I like it ;) When can have the "Rad" and the "Stan" - anything that makes Laser look even cooler.

Congrats on the pointscore - good you are so persistant and committed.

That is really rad in the Rad! Really, it's an inspiration to me. I only sailed 3 of the 6 races in my regatta and if I'd sailed them all, I would have moved up a couple of places, I bet, so I know what you mean. Good luck in the rest of the series.

What were you doing wrong? How were you sailing the course incorrectly?

Early on, I was the guy who crossed the finish line backwards (from the wrong direction) or went through obstructions. It was embarassingly funny.

Oh yeah, or sailed to the wrong mark. . .

Bill & Bill are customers of ours. Both got new boats before Worlds (obviously they didn't bring the hulls though....)

The Willamette Sailing Club, in the summer, regularly tops 40 boats on the line for Monday night Laser Racing.

THAT'S not a bad thing.

Both of them seemed to have had a blast in Brazil, they trained in the Gorge for much of the summer, and said even that didn't produce enough breeze it seemed!

Well, I got a capital one card application in the mail yesterday, with a 'purchase one dollar and you get a real mile toward airline trips"....card. Probably a good opportunity to buy a complete boat, trailer, dolly combo....I mean amortised over a few years....what the heck??

(Is that a mortgage notice there???)

Receipt for Caipirinha:

Get a lime and cut it in several pices, put half of it in a glass; add 2 spoons of sugar; smash it all together; add ice cubes, fill it up with cachaca (aguardente) if you find it, or just add vodka instead (they are then called caipiroska).

Try it with strawberrys or passion fruit, they are good too!
