Does the Sail number tell the year of the boat?

What year boat would have a sail no. of 188718, or does the sail no. not correlate with the year the boat was made?

Why don't you look at the stern; the ID/HIN is near the right hand corner. The sail number is not a foolproof ID since somebody may have swapped sails...

Rich B, a sailnumber 188... means: she is built in 2006.

The sail number is printed to the silver-sticker at the port-side rear wall of the cockpit (view attached photo, there where I added the red arrow to).

As you recognize, she is my brand new boat ... never sailed nor having been in the water (excetpion: raindrops from carrying her home cartopped from the GER Laserstore) in the moment, as there was no seamanlike christening ceremony (which is hold in August at our club harbour party).

Here is a clue from a number near yours:

You are probably a 2006 maybe 2005 just guessing.

Mine is 170xxx and is a 2000 build I believe!

Read the hull as suggested above.
the sail can be different, you need to check the BIN#

A big thank you to all who responded to my question--I believe it saved me a lot of disappointment. I was negotiating on the purchase of what I was lead to believe was a 2001 Laser. Once I got the serial no. that was printed on the transom of the boat, it was clear that it was a 1997 boat made by SLI. The deal was cancelled and I am not out the money I would have paid for a 2001 boat. You are right--knowing the serial no. of the boat is one of the essential pieces of information needed when looking to buy a Laser. Thanks again!

The hull number you posted in the other thread, SLII8718E297, doesn't make sense. Clearly it is an Sunfish/Laser made in 1997, but the second "I" translating to a sail number "18xxxx" is too high. It doesn't gybe with other Lasers I have owned ('93 "14xxxx" and '99 "16xxxx"). I'm guessing it was an "F".

I agree--the serial no. that I was told was on the boat didn't match what the sail number should have been. In any case, it clearly did identify that it was a 1997 model and not a 2001 or newer one as the sail no. would indicate. Thanks.
