Does anyone sail a keel model?

I have seen this posted before, not sure if it was you... I do not have the keel model (wish I did)... But I can guess the performance.

Excpect A), the boat to not point nearly as high as the centerboard (probably not a huge difference, but still). B) expect the keel model to be less tender to board, and easier to recover from a knock down (self-righting).

Beyond that it ought to have more room in the cockpit, because there is no centerboard lines, or hardware.

As I understand it, the keel model was pretty much just used for sailing schools, and rarely was it stocked otherwise... Since the 14.2 was not usually a custom ordered boat (most were purchased from stock), there aren't a lot of the keel models around.

I've rented the keel C14.2 . They sail just fine, very tame, a touch slower. You can rent them in Mission Bay at the Bahia Hotel, Paradise Resort and the Catamaran Hotel if you come to San Diego.

Trailering and ramp lauching would be more work with the keel C14.2. Also I'm guessing harder to resell.

Keel Catalinas

I was able to rent a 16.5 keel @ 14knots windspeed at Santa Barbara last week. Sailed pretty stiff. Keep wondering about sailing prowess of 14.2 at 15 Knots wind.

Just a lot more curiosity about the 14.2.

Last saturday in Mssion Bay it was blowing 15-18 knots while I was sailing my Laser. A couple of 14.2 keel rentals were out sailing with no problems. Impressive considering most tourist can't sail for beans.

Thanks ed. Got your reply.

Hope someone has a Keel model and can reply.

I have a 14.2k and am very happy with its performance. It has always been stored out of the water, and has been lightly sailed. It's got a full battened main and a roller furling jib, both in good condition. I even sailed a circle around an owner of a supposedly high performance boat (lightning?) a few years back. While we talked within about 50 feet of each other, he complained about no wind and I just slowly circled him. He never even noticed!

The boat is great in light air and in light conditions will go to weather better than many 30 foot monos. I used to get a kick out of seeing a 35 footer sail by so I'd launch the boat to chase them in Lake Washington (Seattle). After a couple of miles, I'd pass them, so I returned to the dock.

One day I decided to see what the boat would do in heavy weather so I took it out in 20 knots.

I did my best to pretend to be be a total idiot as if I didn't know anything about a sailboat.

It sailed great and when I decided to go hard on the wind, it took off like a shot with some weather helm. It then heeled over with more helm, and a bit of water slopped over the leeward stern rail. The boat rounded up a bit, took off again and the water drained. This action repeated itself. It's totally uncapsizable and fun to sail in all conditions.

I'm now on a salt water canal and have a TON of tidal current outside the canal so I've only sailed the boat a couple of times since the move. As my Capri is only an auxiliary boat for me, it's now for sale. My big boat is a Dragonfly 1000 trimaran.

Keel model 14.2 in Whidby Island Washington

Thank you for your reply.

I would love to be able to purchase your boat but I am in Florida and it would cost quite a few beans to ship it out here.

You answered a lot of my questions with your reply. I thought it would be hard to flip a keel model on a normal sailing day (10 to 19mph out here).

Good luck on the sale. It should not be long. There are quite a few places to list for free.

Florida?

I bounce back and forth between Los Angeles (Granada Hills)CA and South FL(Fort Loud). Almost every 3 mos or so.

Self Bailing?

Forgot to ask. Is it selfbailing with one person aboard or does water flow in when you take the plug out?

I tried an American Sail 14.6 advertised as self bailing and it's self bailing only as long as there is no one in it. As soon as you take plug out water flow in.
