Successful Sailing Trip In Cabarete, DR

Just got back from taking some clinics at the Laser Training Center in Cabarete. Had the pleasure of training with all 3 instructors (Rulo, Ken Brown, and Ari Barshi). Went down with 3 other sailors and we all had a great time. The very intense wind and training will be hard to forget or duplicated. Already trying to figure out how to go back next year. The town is small, inexpensive and has great beach side bars and restaurants.

We had 18 Ontario sailors go down in Feb and ran an unofficial "Canadian Masters Midwinters" on the last day. Did a downwind training day where we sailed from Cabarete Bay to Sosua and the staff picked up the boats and brought them back while we drank beer on the beach. Very nice.

I'm sure the guys picking up your boats were Wilson and Keacho (pictured with us). They made each day much better with their help launching and retrieving the boats. Whatever Ari pays those 2, I'm sure they earn it! The place is a blast. Ari did mention you Canadians. He said you guys had some record size bar tabs at Eze's!!

It should be easy to tick off. From Toronto, you can get flights around $450. When I was down there I visited the hostel, which is a walk away from the training centre, which costs $14 per night. I am not kidding. And the place is beautiful. Really, really nice. It has a kitchen where you can make your breakfast. I figure you can do a week, the whole thing, with boat rental, flight, food, accomodation and even a bit of coaching for $1,200. If you go with a group, you can get that down a bit if you share coaching costs.

We were 32 people in all. We almost took over El Magnifico. A bunch of wives and girlfriends came as well. One of us brought his three daughters.

Great trip. We'll already planning the 2012 Canadian Masters Midwinters next year. You're invited.
