There was 1 race on Friday in a N-NE breeze ranging from 2 to 6 kts. A start to a 2nd race was attempted but abandoned due to a lack of wind. The sailors were on shore at around 4 PM. Unfortunately, a steady breeze filled in from the SW at around 4:30 PM while the fleet was drinking beer.

On Saturday morning sailors were greeted by a NE wind at 6-7 kts. Most skippers left the beach at around 9:45 for a 10:30 start. At 10:30 the wind had dropped to 2-3 kts. Up the first windward leg, Chip Clifton led a group out to the left and Rapid Buttner led a group to the right.

The right side paid big dividends. Dave Mendelblatt played the shifts out of the right middle and appeared to be leading the fleet. Rapid Buttner and Lee Parks were looking good on the far right. About 200 yards short of the windward mark, the RC abandoned the race due to a lack of wind.

The fleet is being towed to the shore for lunch.

It is Saturday at 2 PM. The fleet has left the beach. The breeze is from the SSE at around 3-5 kts. It looks like the sea breeze is trying to fill in which means it should continue moving right towards the WSW. Hopefully we will get race #2 started shortly.

The very large majority of the fleet sailed to the right side of the course during the first windward leg. About midway through the leg, the wind went slightly left. As the leaders approached the windward mark, the wind moved back right. Anne Edwards played the shifts up the left middle and led the fleet around the first mark. Tony Elliot, Dave Mendelblatt, Clinton Edwards, Martin Ottenheimer, Drew Stanier, David Silverman and Tom Whitehurst were in the chase group. Dave Mendelblatt took the lead on the downwind leg. He led around the left gate and protected the right side of the course to take the bullet.

It is about 4 PM. The wind has built a little and we are going to be starting another race.

The wind has built to 10-15 kts and is shifting between WSW and WNW. The first two starts of race 3 were recalled.

I am now officially jealous that I am not sailing.

This is great. Almost real time reporting from the regatta site. Big kudos to Derek Jackson for keeping us all informed of the action. This illustrates perfectly how the Interwebs can be used by the class to do a much better job than we ever did with the Wooden Leg.

Ditto to what Geezer says....

As a Fort Myers resident presently in (cold) Wooster, OH, I really appreciate Dereks updates.
I hope to have some photo's (to be taken by a friend tommorow) to post soon.
Also, glad to see that it appears we have good number of young sailors at the midwinters.
Hope all are enjoying the weather, Ft.Myers, and the sailing. Hope you have a bit O' wind Sunday.

Saturday's third race got off after several general recalls and one black flag start that had to be abandoned when the pin drifted in the channel. The wind had dropped off a little and was blowing 8-12 kts. Shortly after the start, the wind shifted to the left favoring the sailors that started near the pin and sailed to that side of the course. At the first mark, Juan Delgado had a small lead on the fleet. He was followed by Sebastian Mera, Joe Blouin, Dave Mendelblatt, Lauren Whitehurst, Juan Maegli and Tom Whitehurst. By the leeward mark, Dave Mendelblatt had closed the gap and was second behind Juan Delgado. The top boats rounded the left gate and were greeted by a nice right hand shift after about 100 yards of upwind sailing. Dave got closer to Juan because of the shift, but was never able to get by him. At the finish, Juan Delgado took the bullet. There was a very tight race in the Whitehurst family for 3rd place honors. Lauren was thrilled to edge her father Tom, and made sure he noticed whose stern he was looking at.

The fleet went to shore for a steak dinner and beer.

The start of Sunday's races was moved up to 9:30 AM. That coupled with daylight savings caused lots of tired eyes in the fleet.

The wind is 5-8 kts from the northeast. Hopefully the wind will remain steady or build so we can get a few races this morning.

Sunday's first race finally got started after several general recalls. The black flag was flying and several boats were on the course side.

Off the start, Tom Whitehurst and Paul Odegard started near the pin and led a pack to the left side of the course. Near the boat end of the line, Malcolm Smith and Rapid Buttner were among the first to tack to the right and led a group in that direction.

Juan Maegli played the shifts up the middle of the course and led the fleet at the windward mark. He was followed by Luis Gutierrez, Joe Blouin, Courtney Whitehurst, Linda Tillman, Malcolm Smith, Ned Jones, Drew Stanier, Tony Elliot, Dave Mendelblatt and Tom Whitehurst.

Juan and Luis led the fleet around the course for the entire race. At the finish Juan edged Luis by about 10 yards to take his first bullet of the series. Courtney Whitehurst sailed a tactically sound race to take third place. Dave Mendelblatt fought through the fleet to come back to fourth.

3) Joe Blouin
4) Tom Whitehurst
5) Jason Castillo
6) Sebastian Mera
7) Courtney Young

The current series leader, Dave Mendelblatt, is in the high teens.

The wind has dropped and the outgoing current is strong. Most of the leaders went left in the second weather leg trying to get out of the current. The wind has moved right. Joe Blouin has taken the lead in the 5th race. At the 2nd weather mark he had about 50 yards on the chasers. The top 10 at the second weather mark are:

1) Joe Blouin

4) Courtney Young
5) Juan Delgado

Joe Blouin and Juan Maegli had an intense tacking duel for the last 200 yards of the final windward leg. They must have tacked 20-30 times as they approached the finish. At the finish, Joe proved that age has its benefits and took top honors.

The unoffical top 10 of race 5 are:

The RC is trying to start a 6th race so the competitors will can get a throw out. We are currently starting under black flag after several general recalls. The wind has increased to 8-12 kts.

Race 6 started cleanly under black flag. Tom Whitehurst started at the pin and led the fleet out to the left. A large left hand shift came in while the fleet was about halfway up the windward leg. All of the leaders at the first mark came out of the left side.

At the windward mark, Adriana Garcia was leading Tom Whitehurst by about 10 feet. Juan Maegli was nicely positioned in the top 5 when he roll tacked on the starboard layline about 2 boat lengths from the mark. Unfortunately Juan was a little too aggressive with his tack and tipped over. He quickly got his boat up and rounded in 10th place.

Thanks again Derek! Your updates/narration were fantastic. I hope we can do this for some future events.

As promised, I'm attaching a photo of the midwinters site(Caloosahatchee River, Ft.Myers). Unfortunately, when I asked my wife to take a photo of the racing, I neglected to tell her the racing might not be close to the launch site(forgive me, I'm in Wooster,OH) , so..... those little white specks you see in the distance are the boats . The photo does show the light wind conditions.

Hope ya'll had fun in Ft.Myers !

Derek, great job. It should be a requirement that the host club of big events do this for all big regattas. Go Derek! BB
