Shadow normally has shiny, much longer coat--we had just spent 2-3 hours clipping him.

Here is our new water dog, Kokini. She is 8 weeks old in this picture. The tip of her tail, the "flag" is white. She is bouncing around like a rubber ball right now. It is getting harder to wear her out.

Nightsailor - what breed is she? she's adorable. my wife has been dropping hints about an English Mastiff... that might be too big to sail with me, though!

    cheers,

Kokini is a Portuguese Water Dog. They are very high energy, need lots of attention, smart dogs with great balance, and webbed toes. Her gray look is uncommon.

I looked at the top ten non-allergic breeds, and narrowed it down to this breed. I needed a dog that could move around a heeled sailing yacht, climb a 7' companionway ladder. I alsowanted a dog that would bond strongly to one master, and stay close--typical of the breed. Kokini is a little on the timid side, but not shy-- cautious is the best way to describe her. This breed can be super high energytemperaments...so it is important to chose one carefully. We think we were lucky...although perhaps the females are more subdued. I recommend females of this breed.

Brutus (Boston Terrier).....as first mate. Has only jumped overboard once to attempt to get to some geese. He has not tried that since. The handle on the back of his PFD came in handy for a "recovery on the fly" with one hand on the tiller and the other to pick up a 28lb wet dog . I may save a suction cup bathmat or two to cut and protect the deck a bit as well as give the "crew" some grip ;).

Here she is at 5.5 months. She is frightened getting on and off the big boat and that is a problem since this is my current project. The companionway ladder is 7'. I picked a dog with a lot of agility for this reason. Option B is to let her use the cockpit hatches, which would be pretty easy for her to get around.

Colter "Saltydog" is a German Shorthaired Pointer. You can't keep him or his brother"Rory" out of the water!

Thanks, I'll let him know you said that. :p

Yes, he loves to swim! Ever since he was a pup.

Honestly, he is the smartest, kindest, softest little dog I have ever known, and he happens to be mine. He is a gift.
