I'm looking for a rudder assembly for my 1996 Laser 2. I could also use just the rudder head and fabricate the rest. Has anyone ever tried to fabricate their own rudder head?

Buy if from American Sail as they sell the 14.5 and its pintles ar 6 1/4 spaced and 3/8 diameter on gunguns, and the blade is a direct down near copy of the original Laser 2. The head is much less than an original also. a picture is at this link: http://www.americansail.com/index.p...w=article&id=14:accessories&catid=3&Itemid=14 Order under 14.5 sloop parts or call Dave Stanton at : Toll Free: (800) 844-2399
Also in a pinch a Tasars by West Coast Sailing going for $340 : http://www.westcoastsailing.net/default/tasarrudderhead.html

Thank you for the info. Purchased a set from Midwest Sailing in MI USA. Got a deal on the blade (had it in stock) and they sourced a rudder head for me. Thanks Rick!

Anybody tried the West Coast Sailing Tasar heads? I just called and they said they weren't sure if the new heads fit laser 2s - say there have been changes in pindle / gudgeon spacing.

Had to replace my rudder a few months ago - my lower gudgeon broke, and my old rudder is now at the bottom of Lake Michigan. Fun to learn to steer with the sails!

    Anyway, found some good resources.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, Intensity Sails has good reproduction foils (both rudder and centerboard) also sails (my boat came with a set - they're pretty good) and covers:
    http://www.intensitysails.com/laiisapaandg.html

The best place I found for the rudder head is in the UK - they also have fully assembled rudders:
    Full assembly: http://www.sailboats.co.uk/laser-2-regatta-rudder-assembly
    Rudder head only: http://www.sailboats.co.uk/laser-2-regatta-rudder-stock

On a related note, switch out the crappy old plastic gudgeons for stainless steel. Found these from Fogh Marine - they exactly fit the mounting pattern from the original plastic gudgeons. Mine are now bolted through the transom (required an inspection port in the deck). If the rudder is coming off now, it is taking the whole stern with it.

    Top gudgeon: http://shop.foghmarine.com/browse.cfm/laser-2-gudgeon-with-no-clip-stainless-steel/4,2588.html
Bottom gudgeon with retaining clip: http://shop.foghmarine.com/browse.cfm/laser-2-gudgeon-with-retaining-clip-ss/4,2587.html

Hope it helps - happy sailing.
