Inspection ports and Core material

Hi All,

Old Laser about to start repairs. I will not be racing this... Just want it structurally sound.

1) What's a good material to repair the core material for the hull ?
Fairly large area...
Width of the deck for about 3'; on the port side; all along the cockpit.

2) Can I put a Big Inspection hatch on the stern deck?
Like the Bomar or Beckson rectangular Inspection ports in the following catalog on page ... 14".
Are they strong enough?

Pg 306 in the catalog, or pg 21 of the Issue slide below.

I need to fix the transom too.

Thanks

The original core is Airex, you can use that, or:
plywood (exterior or marine)
balsa
corecell or any of the other foam core materials

#2 - Those are large hatches, structurally they would be ok (unless you put all your weight on one knee), but be aware that the you should not try and cross the centerline with those, the aft deck is not flat. You might consider 5" to 8" inspection ports, one on each side of the aft deck, halfway between center and rail. Let's you get to every fitting in the cockpit, transom and traveller.
