Hello all,

The next issue of The Laser Sailor is that the printers and is expected
to be mailed out next week. It will be wrapped in plastic and will
include the 2003 class handbook.

The magazine's feature story this month is an extended interview with
Dick Rose, chairman of US Sailing's Rules Committee who you might be
familiar with from his column in Sailing World. The subject of the
interview is on kinetics and rule 42 enforcement. It is believed that
many people violate this rule currently, causing hard feelings on and
off the water, because they're not really familiar enough with the
practical dos and don'ts. In addition to the interview with Rose, who
also sits on an international rules body addressing rule 42 and is a
past president of the Laser Class and, there is a sidebar article
featuring interviews with the heads of Intercollegiate sailing,
high-school sailing and Andrew Campbell, a very competent young Laser
sailor who has dealt with switching back and forth between different
"cultures" in terms of kinetics.

The goal here is to get us all "on the same page". There is probably no
other issue that causes more conflict between sailors, especially Laser
sailors, then kinetics. Hopefully this article will be the catalyst for
a healthy discussion on this list and at regattas this year.

If you're not a current member of the class I highly recommend you visit
the Web site (www.laser.org) and sign up today. If you act right away,
you will be on the updated mailing list and receive a copy of your
magazine and handbook shortly. If you have not been at class member in
the past, the handbook will be invaluable. It includes the
Constitution, full (updated) class rules, some history and other
interesting articles.

Remember, the class has now shifted membership to a calendar year basis.
There is no advantage in holding out on renewing your membership until
the middle of the season. It is going to cost you the same $35 whether
you renew now or in July. The only difference is you will lose one or
two issues of our award winning magazine (OK, OK... a bit of marketing
hyperbole here - there is no ice crusher and to my knowledge we have
never won any journalistic awards for the magazine - yet).

Here in the Midwest we're only three weeks away from the start of
frostbite racing and hundreds of Laser sailors are racing in major
events in Florida and California right now. Securing your upcoming copy
of The Laser Sailor could postpone serious psychological trauma and the
resulting long-term therapy that will follow (diagnosis: cabin
fever/sailing deprivation). Think of how much money will save in
deductibles and co-payments on your health insurance by simply joining
the Laser Class!

Best regards
