News Good Boat Speed and Poor Results on Day One (Anna Tunnicliffe)

Palma de Mallorca, SpainApril 1, 2007Today, the opening day of racing at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia here in Palma delivered a result I’d like to forget and a lesson I must never forget. I sailed well and had good boat speed in difficult conditions but my navigation left something to be desired.The Laser Radials were split into two fleets and were supposed to sail two races but we each only completed one race in about four to seven knots of shifty southerly wind. Because we were the first fleet to start there were no other boats out there in the bay that we could study and get a feel for wind shifts and pressure. And because our course was the closest inshore, there were marks for other courses outside of our race area.
