Caulking of coaming (splashguard)

I am about to re-attach the newly refurbushed and repainted splashguard on my Sunfish using stainless steel rivets from Vanguard. I know I need to use a good marine grade silicone caulk in the rivet holes, but should I also run a bead all along the bottom of the splashguard as well?

Jim,
Definately caulk along the front and rear edges of the splash guard and around each hole. Position the guard and line up the holes. Put a dab of caulk in each hole and the insert the rivit. Work quickly so that you can smooth the caulk squeezed out along the edges. Use a good silicon caulk. Do not use 3M 5200/4200 unless you want to make the installation permanet (you will end up destroying the guard if it needs to be removed in the future).
