Boots

Hi, I have searched for a while, and didn't find a conclusive thread. I am currently using my diving boots, and they are starting to get pretty trashed from sailing. I dont want to replace them with diving boots, since I have a drysuit now, and will only use the boots when I am diving wet down south.

What is a good suggestion as a pair of hiking boots to buy? I would be using them in lasers, 420s, FJs, and other small boats.

Thanks in advance,
Tyler

There are loads around. I have a pair of Ronstan ones and they have lasted well (still going strong) but I could not argue they are better or worse than any others (because I have not used any others that are available these days). Mine work, do what I want from them, use and forget and they seem to be lasting well.

I don't know if they are still available as I've not seen any in chandleries for ages and I would think in your case the important thing is to try whatever you like on to get the size correct - which means you are limited to whatever your available shops have in stock.

Glad to hear you are having better luck with Ronstan boots than I did. Mine began falling apart within 4 months of use. Unfortunately, I've spoken to others with the same issue.

I had some Gill boots previously which lasted very well.

I have been using SEA boots for the last 6 months, and they have yet to show any signs of wear. I will admit some bias as I sell SEA gear, but I think others would agree that they are very well made.

I also have the Ronstan boots - have two pair, owned them both approx 4 years (alternate days wearing them). Wear each pair approx 20 days a year. One pair is still in very good shape, the other pair, which I have left out in the sun on a number of occasions is starting to debond on the instep area (which I think is a UV problem caused by me) - Overall have been very happy with them, I wear I size 10 shoe, and these are size 10 boot, fit fine over a sock and drysuit bootie. Because of the neoprene construction, they do a good job keep feet warm in cold/freezing conditions

In the past I owned the Aigle side lace boot, really rotted out quickly in the UV, and had no thermal properties (ie my feet were always cold)

Personally, I like the low top roosters. They also come with wet socks for the cold days. A $40 price tag sure helps too.

Hi I use the Zhik 450 racing boots. They have grip on the top surface to be compatable with a Zhik hiking strap. http://www.boatbits.co.nz/shop/Clot...lothing+and+Footwear/Boots/Zhik+Boot+450.html
They are nice & light!! & comfortable. Not much point in having heavy boots (especially in the middle of the boat). They last about a year before they wear out. Although we sail through winter, so is the equivalent of 2 seasons normal use. It is great to wear rooster thermal socks also in the winter for toasty feet.:)
Cheers Hamish
