HARBOUR SAILING REVIVAL

By: Liann Key Kaighin

The venue for this years’ memorial tribute to Mr. Homer Lowe was sailed on a beautiful sunny day in Marsh Harbour, with the gracious use of Snappas as base for pit stops, liquid fuel and carb loading. This sixteenth annual memorial regatta was also the first in which two classes of sailboats were raced. Sunfish has long been the boat of choice for the Marsh Harbour Sailing Club. This year’s event saw the Optimist class represented by two boats, alongside the larger sunfish, to everyone’s delight. With the knowledge that the Hope Town Sailing Club has engaged a vibrant junior sailing program with the Optimist class, the MHSC looks forward to next year and a much larger fleet of Optis on the line to compliment the Sunfish.

Sixteen sailors participated in the one day sail fest, with ages ranging from four years old to the over 65. Sailors traveled from Nassau, Hope Town, and California, USA, as well as entrants from Marsh Harbour. The six races were sailed weaving through anchored boats in the harbour, mostly with well wishes given by the on-lookers. There were a few worried boaters unfamiliar with the skill and prowess of world class Bahamian sailors, some of whom were judging their tacks with fine line precision. The entire six races were sailed with no protests lodged or brushes with any spectator boats. All in all, it was a very civilized by the rules day.

The winds remained light and in some races, almost calm throughout the day. Lunch was enjoyed by all at Snappas, and the sailors were already asking if the races would be held in the harbour next year. The Race Committee was skillfully handled by Mr. Thierry Huguenin of Nassau, along with the able assistance of George and Sue Holloway of the Hope Town Sailing Club, Mrs. Lynn Key of Marsh Harbour, and Shelley Lightbourne and Francisco deCardenas of Nassau. With the one minute rule in effect for all races, every start was a clean one, with no boats over the line early. This made for a very happy race committee.

Races were won by Lori Lowe, Jim Kaighin, and Donnie Martinborough. With Donnie having four firsts, he was unbeatable, and he captured his sixth Homer Lowe Memorial title. The trophy presentation was held at Snappas during the dinner hour, and was attended by a large crowd. The trophies were representative of Abaco, with photographs of the Bahama Parrot by local artist Tuppy Weatherford. All participants were proud to pose alongside Mr. Homer Lowe’s wife, Mrs. Sadie Lowe, who was on hand to award the prizes. Also in attendance at this 16th Annual Homer Lowe Memorial Regatta were three more generations of the Homer Lowe family, Mr. Jimmie Lowe, Mr. Jodi Lowe, and Master Ethan Lowe, sure to be an up and coming Optimist sailor in a few more years, at least when his teeth come in.

Thanks go to Snappas for allowing the use of their on the water facility, and also to Island Delight Ltd for provisions of ice and drinks on the race course for the sailors and race committee. The next big calendar event for sunfish will be the Bahamas Sunfish Nationals, scheduled for August 26 and 27, 2006 at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club in the Exuma Islands. Any Bahamian sunfish fleet member is eligible to sail in this regatta which will be the qualifier for the Sunfish Worlds to be held in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, later in the year. Any interested persons are welcomed to contact Mr. Jim Kaighin for more information regarding this sunfish event, information on how to become a member of the Bahamian sunfish class, or for information on the RC Laser class also sailed by the Marsh Harbour Sailing Club. 367-3086(w)
