48" Tiller Extension - too long?

I just bought a 48" tiller extension from Intensity. Now that it's arrived I'm looking at it, though, and having trouble seeing how there's room in the Sunfish to sail with such a long extension. It looks about 18" longer than the stock ash one. Anyone have any tips or advice on sailing with this rig? Should I cut it off?

For racing the stock extension is way too short . The extension, with the rudder down, should go right up to the ratchet, and some have it an inch or two longer. I think I cut 4 inches off mine, leaving 44 inches . You want to be be able to be fully hiked out with the tiller extension in front of you, held like a microphone. If you are used to sailing with the tiller extension behind you, held like a frying pan, and you race, you really should try changing your style . If you are a recreationals sailor it doesn't matter and you can shorten it as much as you'd like . bb
