The first 2005 Midwest Regional Sunfish Championship held this past weekend by the Hueston Sailing Association (Acton Lake near Oxford, OH) was a great success. We had good weather (mostly), good company and good food. We managed to sail four races in 4-9 mph winds in about four hours on Saturday. We were happy about that since the weather forecast for wind was not too encouraging. On Sunday the wind didn’t really start until the last boats were sailing off the lake. We did manage to get in two drifters, however. Well, more like one and a half drifters, since the wind died completely and the course was shortened severely in the second race.

Derrick Fries (Clarkston, MI) gave us one of his famous on the water clinics taking first place. Bob Findlay (Wilmette, IL), back in Sunfish this year after a long hiatus, took second. Rich Chapman edged out Fritz Hanselman (both from Libertyville, IL) for third with Fritz fourth. Brad Downen (a recently transplanted Californian from Springfield, IL) took fifth. H.S.A. sailors, Bill Molleran and Jerry Callahan took six and seventh. Laura Peters from H.S.A. took the best “Opposite Sex” trophy with Pierce McCall (Highland Park, IL) the best junior. Complete results can be seen here: Hueston Sailing Association.
