Wavedancer, how does the vang effect the mast step on the laser? The vang attaches to the mast and the boom, not the boom and the deck so how would this create pressure?
Wouldnt it make sense that you spend more time on Starboard than port, and typically start on starboard? I havent done any studies, but just thinking back I believe most people prefer to be on starboard iof for no other reason we round to port, we have rights while on starbaord, and we...
Advantages: Youre not trying to pull your mast thru the mast step tube with your halyard, then run your downhaul to keep the mast with the boat for capsize.
7 coats in and this stuff is amazing. I have even quit sanding between coats as the finish is so smooth even 500 grit paper was not making any scratches(after coat 5).
Epiphanes has been the easiest, best varnish I have ever used, with really good results. I will bever buy another $7 can of...
well I am coat 3 with the Epiphanes and I am already impressed in how different and better this stuff is that the West Marine brand(says it is made by epiphanes) stuff. Rudder, tiller, and some other stuff are looking real good. Not sure I am going for more than 5 or 6 coats, but we will see...
Are Sunfish prone to the mast step coming loose at the base like the Laser? When you say older boats, could you clarify a year and was there different construction in some years that are more prone to problems with the mast step?
Thanks!
Why thin the first coats? I just bought the Epifanes small container at West for 23$, the thinner was another $15, so I opted not to buy it....But tell me a good reason and I may reconsider.
Thanks!
I recently was given a Phantom Hull but no other parts. I know the rudder is different but can a Sunfish rudder be retrofitted? All other parts seem to be okay for retro, just wondering about the rudder. If anyone has a phantom rudder and casting just lying around, well, let me know.
I think you will run the risk of losing fleets who have lost trust in the Class, plus, what support do local fleets have from the Class or Builder? Im helping with a "Laser Only, One design, no knock-off sails regatta" at my club this weekend and havent seen any support.
Who should we ask for...
I have been following this sail thing for a couple of years, and have owned a factory sail, and will own one again, but at this time Im sailing a replica.
For those years Ive been following this mess I have yet to understand this class association, its builder relationship, and even more...
I sold some spars this weekend that came with a boat that was bought in a package from a sailing club. Some of the spars were pretty old, and did not have any stickers on them. The question is...when were non laser spars available, and how can one know if they are legal if no stickers are visible?
The ILCA approved today the new Carbon Wing Sail for all Lasers beginning in 2012. The sail will retail for $650, and Intensity will not have a replica version right away, but after after some testing it should be available for $179 in 2013. The prototype looks very promising, the big test...
Shaun,
I drilled carefully through the first layer of glass(be very careful not to go all the way thru). I did not make the hole any bigger afterwards since my hull was so delaminated the foam was disintegrated and therefore allowed alot of resin to get in. I have read about people bending a...
I found an easy way to keep the deck clean. After holes were drilled, I simply put a piece of painters tape over the hole and used a pop rivet to break thru the tape and open the hole up enough for the resin. After lots of resin, the hukll is suprisingly stiffer, and then I peepled off the...
