    Hi, need some advice.

Where would you keep the boat and where/how would you launch it? A Laser is easy to transport and launch. But it is not a very social boat because it is crowded with more than one adult. A standard Laser is likely to be too much boat for most women except in lighter winds. Consider the Laser...

    Help choosing a boat!!!

If you are a member of a club or considering joining a club, the best boat is the boat that other people are sailing. If your local club has a laser fleet with people you like, that would be a great choice.

    random question

Reach in the inspection port with a sponge and get out as much water as you can that way. Blowing in a single port with a shop-vac will apply too much pressure and be bad for the hull. But if you have two ports in a hull, open both and blow in one. That will dry out the hull quickly.

    Dehydration

GNC sells supplement pills containing potassium and magnesium. Take a pill before heading out for the day. Much cheaper than Gatorade.

    holding mainsheet with tiller hand

Thanks for the replies. I'll try your ideas on the water tomorrow.

    holding mainsheet with tiller hand

When going from a run to a beat I need to trim the mainsheet a lot, fast. So I pull it with one hand, hold the sheet with the tiller hand, and re-grip with the other hand. The problem I have is that I usually end up holding it in the tiller hand between just my thumb and forefinger. That is okay...

    Class Politics Is this right??

I tie off the mainsheet to the hiking strap, but I think I should probably add another stopper as well. the reason is that the mainsheet I use, Bzzz line, is hard to keep a knot in. The knot on the hiking strap always comes loose. Usually I have used two half hitches, which did not hold. Today I...

    Never sailed before, some questions

In paddling sports, they suggest that if the combined air and water is below 120 degrees F, you should wear a wetsuit. In waterskiing, they say 100 degrees F.

    trailer conversion

Does anyone have plans for how to convert a trailer so that it caries the boat upright but supported under the gunnels, not on the bottom of the hull?

    Laser storage above water

Supporting the boat on the bottom while lifting it in and out of the water should not be a problem. Subjecting the hull bottom to thousands of bounces while trailering is bad for it.

    Avalon/Stone Harbor, NJ

I may be spending a week in Avalon or Stone Harbor this summer. It appears from maps that there is very limited water on the bayside and probably not much opportunity for good sailing. Is this true? Are there any good places for sailing and launching in that vicinity? Thanks.

    racing simulators

I'm thinking of buying a racing simulator. There are two by Posey that look interesting, Advanced Racing Simulator and Sailing Tactics Simulator. I saw Advanced Racing Simulator at work today and was impressed. Can anyone compare the two simulators? Website: http://www.poseysail.com/

Laser vs. Barnett 1400 vs Chrysler Dagger 14

The Laser is not the perfect boat for all occasions. It's greatest strength is as a racing boat. If you want a boat for fooling around with, it' not the greatest. One problem is that you can't lower the sail without lowering the mast, which makes the Laser less than ideal if you want to sail off...

differences between radial and full rigs

I have read (and my experience tends to confirm this) that the radial is nearly as fast as a standard upwind, but slower downwind.

    laser vs. laser radial

You are about 25 pounds shy of the low-end ideal Laser standard weight, and spot on for the radial. In 15-25 mph winds, a radial will give you all the excitement you crave, and more. The main thing to say in favor of a standard rig is that it will give you lots of excitement in lighter winds...

    Bloc-to-bloc speed vs easing

I have experienced exactly the same. Especially in stronger winds and waves, to keep up speed and maintain control I have to ease the sheet.

Dear Charleston's James Island Yacht Club, Come on.. It's time for some changes..

I once suggested to a member of a sailing club with a long waiting list (because they have no room for more boats) that boats that have not been sailed for two years or more be removed from the property so that people who will actually sail their boat can join. There is a Flying Scot at the...

    Age range?

I participated in some Laser races at a nearby club. I think that I was the youngest sailor, even though I'm 54. You are not too old!
