Buying a second hand laser in South Africa

    >>Randburg (Gauteng) close to the Coca Cola Dome (I think they are called Windsurf Africa) This is also in Johannesburg. No idea regarding import duties I must say. From my experience, getting a trailer is not as easy as it sounds, all the sub-R15K boats I've seen have never had a trailer...

Buying a second hand laser in South Africa

Alex, What are you looking for price wise, what do you want to get out of it? i.e. old boat for bashing around, newer boat for serious racing etc. New Generation Yachting in Randburg [Johannesburg] often has some lasers for sale, I got mine from them, http://www.ngy.co.za/ I'm the class...

old school rig to pro rig

I am also looking to get the new style vang, I experimented a bit as GeoffS suggested, but imho the old style vang still sucks badly! New style vang is very expensive in SA though, I was quoted last year I think around R2500, much more than the deck plates/cleats/etc [which were fitted as an...

    Tacking Exercises

OK, never been to Benoni, I wanted to go the Benoni Open on the 23rd, but I don't have a trailer and am struggling to find one [plus i was doing a first aid course that weekend! :) ]. I sail at Rietvlei [PSC]. No wind for us though last weekend, lets hope tomorrow is better!

    Tacking Exercises

Where in SA do you sail? You were lucky to have that much wind .. in fact any wind at all!! I burn very easily but find Everysun Factor 40 does fine for me against the Highveld sun. Alternatively as Alex/Steve suggested, a long-sleeve rash vest from any surf shop should do, SportsMans...

    Sail age

Well, I have pretty much the oldest sail, so get beat by more experienced guys with newer sails but then also beat guys with more/less experience and newer sails. I dont really expect to suddenly take off to the top, but do wonder how much its holding me back from regularly threatening the top...

    Sail age

Interesting you say that, I find I can get good speeds downwind at times, catching the guys in front of me sometimes. I cornered one of the top guys at our club and he also recommended a replacement, but suggested I gett practicing with this sail till the end of the current season, then break...

    Sail age

That's good to know, thanks! Yeah, I don't think I'd notice the drop on a new sail!!

    Sail age

Hi, I found out the other day my boat is a 1982 [93288] Now I have a colored sail, which afaik was issued with some of the 80's boats. What I was wondering the other day, does this mean that I still have the original sail for the boat? That is, my sail is > 20 years old?!?! I know other...

Mainsheet Block - Ratchet On or Off?

I recently replaced my mainsheet block with a Holt-Allen block with an automatic ratchet that cleats under load, works pretty well, though sometimes I'm not sure if I wouldn't rather be the boss of when its on or not. I think actually I would prefer maybe if it cleated under a bit less load.

sounds like what a whale would sound like..

lol, I heard this for the first time the other day and again today, in what must have been 20kn plus both times. I had no idea what it was, I thought my boat was about to rip in half!! Asking around the consensus seems as above, sharpen the edges of the foils. Though I must say I only get a...

    Colored Sail Legal...Yes.

Hi, I bought a Laser with a coloured sail, deemed legal by the boatyard that sold it to me, but i noticed browsing pics that no-one has a coloured sail racing [even older boats] and searching here seems to turn up comments that a coloured sail might be a "practice sail" or not legal. I...

    Other boats owned..

Right now I have only my Laser, but would like to have a 2-man dinghy, I like the Fireball or possibly a 505, and would love to ultimately add a small keel boat to finish my fleet off, a J22 or J24 would be great, but finances may limit me to a Hunter 19, also got a nice fleet following up here.

rules for placing a name on your boat?

Hi, I have been asked by a friend if there are any rules regarding the placement of the name of her boat on the hull? I told her afaik she can put the name anywhere on the hull, provided it doesn't cover the sticker thingie with the serial number/etc on [which i don't believe she has...

    dolly when car-topping?

Thanks for the tips guys. The dealership is close to my office, so I am going to inquire there as to suggested weight limits and roof-racks. I don't mind loosing some mpg , I won't be traveling fast anyways! Interesting on the dolly that breaks down I dont think mine dows but maybe I'll check!!

    dolly when car-topping?

Ok, cool, I didn't think that would work, with the dolly over the hull. In your "expert" (!) opinion would you say theres a size limit to the car that this is practical on? I drive a Opel Corsa Club [not sure what its equivalent is overseas, i know the Astras are vauxhalls in UK]...

    dolly when car-topping?

Hi, I am facing the decision on trailer or car-top to a regatta like 500 miles away, I've searched and find opions divided. My question though is when you car-top, what do you do with your dolly? Surely you can't park it on the roof or it would destroy your boat/car?? If you don't take it with...

Best way to take sheet and tiller extension with you when tacking

Deimos, I sail on inland dams/lakes, and have exactly the same problem, especially with this highveld wind, on light days like today its not uncommon for the wind to suddenly shift 90-180 degrees, requiring you to move very quickly or suffer an embarresing capsize in front of the clubhouse! :)...
