    Kevlar

shoot.. the leadmine I race on blew up the main not too long ago, 800+ SqFt of nice kevlar, minus a 7 foot rip. She's got a new main, might be able to talk the owners out of the old one if anyone wants a fun kevlar main or 7... :) we were gonna make crew bags, but I think they would get a kick...

How do you gauge your speed

I am glad you got it. :) the diagram didn't make any sense to me until i started drawing all over it, then it made sense. Just took the laser out for a bit and did some practical stuff. Without competition sailing a set course, or instruments it is difficult to get any sort of true data, but...

How do you gauge your speed

look at the diagram again.. I added to it. I added a boat, and the dead zones in a few different places. In the middle of the diagram is a boat on the red wind line at 45 degrees to the wind, and a boat on the blue wind line at 45 degrees to the wind. they are pointing very different...

How do you gauge your speed

I am sailing with the wind at 45 degrees to the sail... If I go faster the wind is now 35 degrees to the sail... I have to bear off a bit to get back to 45 degrees to the sail... The numbers are for clarification, I am not saying what the proper angle to sail a laser is. understanding...

How do you gauge your speed

well, lets see if I can confuse everyone a little more... My limited knowledge tells me: When you go faster, the AW moves forward. To maintain optimum polars you have to bear away. Your polars don't change... ever. The dead zone is still what it always was, if you don't make a correction, you...

    Mooring a Laser

take a crappy sail, pin the boat, and let the clew go. How much wind do you expect overnight? a flogging main shouldn't flip the boat. No worries about battens, or wrapping, just let her be... or, drop a weight, rig it to one side main sheet block, sit the boat sideways, sail in the water. Put...

    In Boat Music

they also started putting radios in cars.. I can't even imagine how that works... Sometimes you just want to sail (kayak and surf, all of which I have done to music) for fun, and zone out...

    In Boat Music

I have an otter box and swear by it. The ipod works perfect in it. I had some waterproof headphones too, but forgot them at home and got a few real cheap in ear headphones and use them often. I also just got a GZONE phone.. fully waterproof.. no more dry bags for me.. :)

    Class Politics why so strict?

I knew I recognized that attitude somewhere.. :) You are forgiven. Lets work on the JC strap, then we can talk about rigging upgrades. :) Slow changes is what makes this the Laser fleet. It is what it is, and it isn't going to change. It is why the fleet is so strong, I can lose just as bad in...

    Class Politics why so strict?

and if you want to sail on a boat that is not so restricted you should go sail on a Finn... dismissing someones opinion like that is not what this class is about. It is about equal boats. You cannot say the rigging has nothing to do with speed. It is a fact. If it had nothing to do with speed...

    Class Politics why so strict?

Just because it does not have a direct impact on speed does not mean it does not give you an advantage. The JC strap is certainly an advantage. Top of the line rigging is certainly an advantage. If it wasn't, no one would want it. I am not saying it is a bad thing, but the argument of "it won't...

A few questions from a new sailor

Hiya George, this is Bill.. I won't have a long tiller until you get the one I ordered in the mail.. :) I am on the Seattle list, but it seems to be a lot of spam lately... I'll be heading out on the 7th, just to meet and greet and spectate. Thanks for the info in the strap and lines...

A few questions from a new sailor

Not just new to lasers, but new to sailing in general. Went out a few times in mild breeze and am learning. Recently that mild breeze turned into 10kts steady. Man, the learning curve got steep! Attaching the hiking strap: I am using a sheet bend. I have never seen one fail... until that day...

    Orange Bowl Open/Masters Indemnification

Waivers aren't worth the paper they are written on. You cannot sign away certain rights, many of which waivers ask you to relinquish. Having organized many motorsports/offroad races I am fully versed.. Waivers are there for the sue happy folks that just like to complain about things. If anything...

    Rigging the daggerboard

the cunningham thread was so thorough, I thought I would post my small quandry... Inherited an old laser, upgraded everything on deck (Thanks westcoast) except daggerboard and rudder. Daggerboard had some tattered line. I have shock cord, and a brummel, now what? Also on my first outing the...

Need visual inspection / advice (Seattle)

I am new to sailing. Have been racing big boats for the past few months. Was just loaned an 82 laser. It needs a quick visual by someone who knows what they are looking at for things I need to replace/upgrade. I am not planning on racing this particular hull, but will eventually be racing. I...
