    Boom is getting me down

When the boom is cranked down on a beat and I go to tack, I get caught by it and its made me capsize a few times. Apart from crouching more, do you guys release the kicker before a tack? If so, how much?

    Lookin for Laser vids

I'm looking for some up to date video clips of laser racing, preferably inland/light wind stuff, anyone have some good links or clips they can post? The only one we appear to have on the site is from the 70's - great but like to see something more up to date!

How can you tell if a Laser hull is airtight? (and watertight!)

In fact be VERY careful not to put too much pressure into the hull - this has been a topic on the RS forum where guys have used foot pumps etc, apparently the air pressure is too much and can split the deck/hull joint. Just lightly blowing into the drain hole at the back is enough.

    Mast Step - Sleeve

Apparently an old washijg up liquid bottle is the right size for slipping over the end of the mast, I'm on the lookout for one and will let you know if it works! (Not sure if you guys have washing up liquid in the US - you all use dishwashers, right?;))

Is it worth replacing the plastic ring between mast sections?

Do you mean the fit is sloppy between the two sections? If the connection is worn and loose, it will allow the top section to swivel round = not good. Try wrapping a bit of packing tape around the connection to acheive a snug fit. If the ring is broken it may be worth replacing but otherwise...

How to make a laser deck white again!

Here in the UK we have Muc-Off (I also use it on my motorbike but they now do a version for boats) and thats really effective, specially if you use a stiff brush. Comes in a hand spray, spray a section, work in with the brush, then hose off after a few minutes, there's no acid in it and it words...

Is XD worth the money? **Poll**

Think XD is a definate improvement over the old setup and have upgraded my old 120k with all the Harken goodies, but still think they have missed an opportunity to make it even more user friendly, IMHO only have to look at a Supernova to see where the controls should really be - led to both...

    rolling sails

I take it you mean that you horizontally fold the top third, then roll it all. I have a plastic drainpipe and roll my new sail around this with no folds. If you fold the top of the sail, doesn't that create a horizontal crease, and wouldn't that affect the airflow? Also do you guys take the...

mast step/lower mast section wear strips

Guys at our club recommend an old washing up liquid bottle with the top cut off (the cheapo value type from supermarkets), which seems to be the right shape and size to slip over the end of the mast. Yet to try it myself, but I'm going to. Think the ide is that over time it wears (and not the...

    mainsheet block faves

What mainsheet block does the forum recommend to replace my '86 vintage original? Would this be a good one for a poll?

    Don't press the red button!

Interesting theory. If they are filled with gold (or diamonds, caviar etc.) I may ask the store to cut out the button, to save weight. Doubt I'll get a discount.

    Don't press the red button!

This is what I'd like to be....

Here's a pic of the damage:

    Don't press the red button!

Just what is that red button for on the sail? If I press it, does it make me go faster? If so, I think mine is faulty.

    Snap!

I'd already jibed but it happened when I let out the sheet. Its one of the earlier radial rigs (black lower section), came with the boat and I think it is about 1986, so it may have been stressed/fractured over the years. The fracture occured just under the kicker and went through the rivet...

    Snap!

Had a great weekend's sailing here in the UK at our local club pond in strong winds but it cost me! Managed to snap a radial mast just below the kicker (on a run) on Saturday and then another one, at the join, after an invert on Sunday, also ripping the sail in the process. Two masts and one...

    pain when hiking

I try not to bring any livestock onto the boat during races.:) Seriously I had similar problems but the hiking pants and tighter toestrap helped.

    Old colours??

Hi GM Not sure who is doing the matching but speak to Adrian at Glassfibre solutions, he did similar work to my boat of the same vintage (I think it was also dove grey, or perhaps vela grey) and you cannot tell where he repaired. If yopu are doing it yourself he should at least point you in...

    Boom retention line

That may work but in IMHO on windy days if you undo the clew to quickly depower at the bank the boom can easily fall to the deck and then into the water - then you are scrambling round the boat trying to retrieve it. Even if you do lift it off and place on the deck it tends to slide off (along...

    Boom retention line

If its to keep the mast on the gooseneck once the clew is undone from the boom, I'd also be interested. On our RS we drilled a hole in the top of the boom and into the gooseneck pin, then popped in a split pin( tied to a little line. Is some form of retainer like this class legal?
